2014 UMANI RONCHI VERDICCHIO
'CASAL DI SERRA'
$11.99 BTL./$71.94 - SIX PACK

Go east of Tuscany towards the Adriatic coast, and you will come into the most exciting, up and coming wine region in all of Italy, Le Marche. Both reds and whites are produced, and the tiny appellation of Castelli dei Jesi is a gem for white wines, and are some of Italy's tastiest. Even today, Le Marches remains a largely undiscovered gem in the heart of Italy and one of the most stunning regions to visit.

Beautifully aromatic scents of crustacean shells, mineral, and kaffir lime follow into a texture that is clean and harmonious as the day is long. Loads of elevation and mineral fill out the sneaky, yet substantial finish. If there ever is a perfect companion to a bowl of steamed mussels with some saffron, this is it!

If this wine were made in Tuscany, Piedmont or the Veneto, it would easily be twice the price! Rosso Conero is one of the red wine regions of Le Marches deemed as DOC. The regulations for the DOC are that it must be at least 85% Montepulciano with up to 15% Sangiovese permitted to be blended in.

Umani Ronchi’s San Lorenzo takes its name from one of the two vineyard sources is made with 100% Montepulciano with 50% aged in 5000-8000 liter casks and the other half aged in neutral barriques. Poetic and animalistic all at once, very exciting aromas of plum, violet, mineral and telltale Montepulciano sanguine aspects build nicely from the glass. In the mouth, it is firmly dry with nice depth and earth tones. Food-friendly and undoubtedly Italian both in its aromatic and flavor profile; enjoy this sinister beauty over the next 3-5 years with hearty pasta dishes or braised beef.

2007 ANTONELLI MONTEFALCO
ROSSO RISERVA
$24.99 BTL./$149.94 - SIX PACK

Fillipo Antonelli is a producer who makes wines that are an alternative to the better known, but heavy-handed wines of Caprai who seems to be the name that everyone mentions when they think of Umbria. Truth be told, Caprai wines are alcoholic, overoaked beasts in comparison to these selections. Striving to make wines that are both full of character and flavor while retaining freshness and balance that carries over to the table. Antonelli attains all of this with plenty of Umbrian terroir and concentration and doesn’t require one to invest in a pair of tweezers to remove the oak splinters from the tongue.

Montefalco Rosso embodies the great bond between wine and the area of Montefalco in the landlocked region of Umbria that borders Tuscany, Le Marches and Lazio. With Fillipo's wines, Riserva really signifies something more than just adding more shiny new barrels. Produced from their oldest vines and finest plots, the blend of 70% Sangiovese 15% Sagrantino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot really morphs into a wine that is certain to seduce. Major-league, very deep aromas waft from the glass. Prominent blackberry, sage, cherry pit and balsamic notes follow through to a texture that is palate-staining, layered, and complex all while maintaining an airy aspect. Extensive, expansive and very Italian, at age 8, this wine is really starting to take shape and drink beautifully. Enjoy this with a slow roasted leg of lamb jacked with Italian herbs or a full-flavored meat and cheese-filled lasagna over the next 4-5 years.

2007 ANTONELLI MONTEFALCO SAGRANTINO
'CHIUSA DI PANNONE'
$45.99 BTL./$275.94 - SIX PACK

The name Sagrantino derives from the Latin, "Sacer", a holy wine destined for consumption during the Christian festivals. The spiritual grape of Umbria's Montefalco region, Antonelli does a magnificent job in bringing out its full expression. Rarely seen outside of this area, the Sagrantino puts forth large-scaled wines that can age for a long time. Chiusa di Pannone is a small and mighty 6½ acre vineyard that is chock full of chalky-clay soil with underlying gravel deposits. This wine is a passion for Antonelli as only limited amounts are produced and only from fine vintages.

Robust, heady and intense, blackberry, tobacco, mint, almond, spice and vanilla dominate the nose while the mouth is rich and so chewy that you almost need a fork to have this wine. The super-long aftertaste confirms all of the characters of the aromas. Still a baby, but one can see the deep and thrusting core of beauty and potential that is within the entire package of this wine. If you do uncork one, have it with a heavy risotto dish, maybe an Italian beef stew, but if aged, grab some fine Gorgonzola and prepare yourself for something that is truly operatic. Seriously, this wine will have no problem aging 25-30 years from vintage date. A great choice for those who have a child or future occasion from 2007.
