2009 PIERRE-BISE ANJOU VILLAGES
'SUR SCHISTES'
$23.99 BTL./$287.88 CASE

As mentioned earlier this week, Chateau Pierre-Bise is one of France’s epic producers. While well known for their dessert wines, this Chateau exceeds extremely well with its dry reds and whites as well. 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a Loire Valley interpretation of these varietals versus that of Bordeaux or the New World and these reds always perform beautifully with the bird.

Grown on schist soils, up-front stoniness, raspberry, dried herbs, licorice, sandalwood and tobacco permeate from the glass and continue challenging the olfactory senses as it opens. In the mouth, the warmth of the 2009 vintage plus the added dimension and power of the Cabernet Sauvignon gives it plushness. Overall, the composition of the wine is unlike the New World because it is not sweet, instead it’s virtuous, unadulterated and seemingly fragrant in the mouth with a steely underbelly. The finish is refined, soulful, and a definitive taste of France. Partake in a bottle of this stellar western Loire red with turkey or a roasted, herb-encrusted pork-loin over the next 3-5 years. It's lunch-time as I write this and I'm getting hungry as these words are being typed!

2014 BOW & ARROW MELON
WILLAMETTE VALLEY
$17.99 BTL./$215.88 CASE

For me, is may be the most exciting under $20 dry white wine in Oregon and from one of our amazing urban stars. Scott Frank worked at Cameron for 4 years and he takes his cue by specializing in wines other than Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Melon is the grape from the area around Nantes, specifically the Muscadet region and this Oregon version is ripping and chock full of radiance.

Commencing with minerally scents and undertones of flint, this pale white then draws more complexity from lemongrass, melon and lime tones for enhancement. Brisk and mouthwatering on the palate with fine intensity and length, not only is this wine akin to being hit in the ass with an arrow, it is a wonderful match for a plate of freshly shucked northwest oysters or the white meat of the holiday turkey – but you all knew that anyway.

2014 CHAPUIS MACON-MANCEY ROUGE
$13.99 BTL./$167.88 CASE

Along with delivering very fine white wines, Domaine Chapuis is very sure-handed with their red wines as well. This red also comes from the Maconnais region, specifically Macon-Mancey.

A personable red that one doesn’t have to grapple with, it really falls into our mantra of don’t think, just drink - a lot!!! Fragrance personified, bursting cherry, plum, black pepper and underlying rose petal lift from the glass and follow through to a lively texture that is full of zip and defined fruit and sneaky volume and length. A perfect red for turkey or anything else with feathers, it will also pair beautifully with a plate of charcuterie.

2014 WALTER SCOTT PINOT NOIR
'CUVEE RUTH'
$35.99 BTL./$431.88 CASE

Contrary to popular belief, the Willamette Valley doesn’t end in McMinnville and some of our greatest wines happen to come from the Eola-Amity region. Walter Scott is one the area’s superstars that we have worked with since their inception.

Cuvee Ruth is a Reserve Pinot Noir that is meant to span a very long bridge between this operation’s terrific Willamette Valley version and their very limited single vineyard wines will which arrive in the Spring. A selection of favorite barrels coming from top-level vineyards including Seven Springs, Freedom Hill, Temperance Hill and Eola Springs, this wine is absolutely smoking defying the stereotype of this large-scaled vintage.

Certainly not a caricature, this is Pinot in its most beautiful form. Voluptuous, fragrant and seemingly androgynous with masculine and feminine aspects that are bursting, broad and possess ample perfume. An extra level of depth and complexity both aromatically and in flavor-profile give way to a finish that is lacy, sultry and quite persistent. The Cuvée Ruth is THIS good and if this is the case, we can't wait to see the single vineyard wines when they are released! This superb Pinot has excellent appeal to it at this moment but given its deceptive backbone and dimension, it will easily age at least another decade.
