2014 CA' MONTEBELLO PINOT NERO BIANCO OLTREPO PAVESE
$14.99 BTL./$179.88 CASE

Indeed, there is such a thing as white Pinot Noir and it is not pink! Seen in various regions of the world including here in Oregon, this rather quirky and unique white wine made from red grapes. How is it done you may ask. There are several techniques to obtain this result, one of which is done by this rather impressive Lombardy-based, Oltrepo Pavese producer.

Ca’ Montebello is a cool producer putting forth some of Italy’s most fun and intriguing wines from an area that is probably more known for rice cultivation and salami more than wines. Do not be misled; wine has been made here for three millennia both fizzy and still as well as red and white. Considered the largest growing area for Pinot Noir with just under 10,000 acres under vine, OIltrepo Pavese does very interesting things with this finicky grape. Ca’ Montebello leaves this wine macerate on the skins at very cold temperatures for a short period and then vinified in stainless steel tanks. The result is a wine with a straw-like color but with engaging vociferous aromas of baked apple, honey, ginger and underlying lemon blossom aspects. Harmonious yet mouth filling, plenty of vivid aspects arrive in the middle and back end. Quite individual and perfect for winter soups or an omelet spiked with chanterelles.

2012 MARC COLIN BOURGOGNE
PINOT NOIR
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

Domaine Marc Colin is a white Burgundy specialist known for their prodigious Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and St-Aubin wines. What are some of Burgundy’s fine secrets are the estate’s red wines that encompass five selections and four appellations.

Domaine Colin’s Pinot Noir comes from vineyards on the plain of Chassagne-Montrachet and St-Aubin planted in 1985 and 1987. This delicious value is very unpretentious in its profile and begs you to drink more. Prototype French Pinot Noir with its true seductive underbelly, although this does have ample structure lurking beneath the surface which will allow it to develop for another 2-4 years. Refined, poised and simply put one hell of a red Burgundy for under 20 bucks.

2014 AYRES PINOT NOIR
WILLAMETTE VALLEY
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

Having worked in all facets of the wine industry including 5+ years as cellar master at Domaine Drouhin, Brad McLeroy is a serious Ribbon Ridge-based player as evidenced by making prolific Pinots since 2003. The Willamette Valley is always one of the great contenders to the mythical 20-buck Oregon Pinot crown and 2014 will definitely be in the hunt.

Made from a blend of Brad’s estate fruit as well as some from the Eola-Amity region, the newly arrived 2014 Ayres Willamette Valley cuvee is extremely enjoyable in its youth with lacy aromas and flavors of red berries that coat the palate, melting seamlessly with complex flavors of smoked cinnamon and peppercorn. Plenty of depth and expansion shines all the way through to the cassis-laden finish. Enjoy now through 2019 with roasted rack of lamb, grilled pork/beef tenderloin and any mushroom dish.

2012 J. CHRISTOPHER PINOT NOIR 'NUAGES'
CHEHALEM MOUNTAIN
$35.99 BTL./$431.88 CASE

Most of our friends know of our fondness for J. Christopher wines, which stretches all the way back to their inception with the 1996 vintage. It has been a joy to watch them grow and expand into new digs over the years as well as to expand their focus of Pinot Noirs to include an ‘appellation series’ of offerings made from three of Oregon’s top growing regions.

Three Chehalem Mountain sites, Lia's, Adams & Olenik Vineyards make up the blend for this hearty, yet very finesse-laden offering. Darker and revealing more red earth tones, sensual aromatics build and build from the glass. Black fruit compote, rose petal, kisses of coffee, pepper and vanilla round out the aromas. Lacy, velvety flavors kick everything off with touches of power lying beneath this rather refined surface. Cool, quite lavish and bringing out more cinnamon especially on the long finish that spreads out all over the palate. Very impressive stuff indeed, this has a genuine likable quality to it now but there is no problem to put this away and enjoy some in 10-12 years down the road.
