2014 DOMAINE CHAPUIS
BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

Domaine Chapuis is a small estate based in the northern sector of Burgundy's Macon region, specifically the village of Mancey. Having been referred to this Domaine a couple of years ago, we are once again pleased to offer up the new vintage of what has become a terrific Cellar Door favorite in our rotation of White Burgundy wines that represent first-rate value. Chapuis is a small estate specializing in Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay. This particular wine differs from the estate’s Macon-Mancey Blanc, and even though it can be labeled as such, the Domaine prefers to label this one as Bourgogne Chardonnay due to the differences in soils and exposures. Having more in common with higher-priced Rully or Montagny, this white does not see any new barrels.

Aged in 1-3 year old barrels, Bosc pear, lemon and cereal tones shine with underlying pure minerality on the nose. There is impressive charisma here. In the mouth, it seems to pirouette like a ballerina before it gains depth and zest with prominent powdery mandarin, stone and faint spice aspects arriving on the finish. Drink over the next 2-3 years with the usual suspects that go well with white burgundy, scallops, sole or chicken with mushrooms…This wine used to be a great deal for 19.99, due to the currency exchange working in our favor, this wine is now an unmitigated heist for 16.99.

2014 DOMAINE CHAPUIS
MACON-MANCEY ROUGE
$13.99 BTL./$167.88 CASE

Even though it is only October 16, it’s not too early to give thought to holiday turkey wines and we have quite a nice selection coming over the next few weeks. For today, we decided that we would let you in on one early and have the chance to taste it.

Along with delivering very fine white wines, Domaine Chapuis is very sure-handed with their red wines as well. This red also comes from the Maconnais region, specifically Macon-Mancey. As most folks know, red Burgundy is made from Pinot Noir, except in Macon. Red wines labeled with Macon are always 100% Gamay. If Pinot Noir is utilized from this area, it is then labeled as Bourgogne Rouge. Located about 45 minutes from the Beaujolais border, it makes sense that Gamay would be present. Quite different from Beaujolais due to the soil differences, this wine fragrance personified. Bursting cherry, plum, black pepper and underlying rose petal lift from the glass and follow through to a lively texture that is full of zip and defined fruit and sneaky volume and length. A perfect red for turkey or anything else with feathers, it will also pair beautifully with a plate of charcuterie.

2013 DOMAINE VOGE
COTES-DU-RHONE 'LES PEYROUSES'
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

Not your ordinary Cotes-du-Rhone but one from the great Cornas masters! From the cooler climate, 45th parallel Northern Rhône Valley and 100% Syrah, this fascinating, refined and aromatic expression is typical of the region with miniscule production. Serious business, this offering is so unlike the wines from the Southern Rhone in its profile and projects nothing but sheer poise and grace all while having excellent substance and backbone.

2013 is five in a row of very good to outstanding vintages in the Northern portion of the Rhone Valley. After visiting the area earlier this year, the area of Cornas, Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage that really excelled and the makers in these areas consider it some of their finest work. Obscenely fragrant with currants, violets, pronounced smoked meat that is classic to the area. The black pepper is here, but it is a backdrop along with hints of dark chocolate. A refined killer showing expansive layered flavors that creep through the mouth. High-toned grip that moves into red fruits at the end finishing long and over delivering for a mere 20 spot. Buy yourself and Sam a bottle and get his dog one, too!! Drink this sensuous Syrah over the next 3-4 years.

2012 DOMAINE DU BEAURENARD
CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
$39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE

Vintage after vintage, the Coulon brothers, Daniel and Frederic, produce some of Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s finest wines. These two guys are legitimate, bonsai farmers utilizing organic and biodynamic principles all which lead to wines that bring mighty energy and structure to wines that are seemingly soaked in sunshine. For years, we have been touting these wines and after visiting again this past June, I am fully convinced that this highly regarded and awarded estate is making even more prolific wine than ever!

For 40 bucks, this wine is very outstanding, from a grand-scale vintage and is one that will easily drink and develop for 15+ years. The following are from my visit to the Domaine in June: ‘Full nose. Blackberry packed with a mélange of black, white and pink peppercorns. Dense, creamy scents. Licorice and thyme hiding beneath the surface. Expansive, loaded and somewhat of a spice monster. Brilliant fresh acids slice through the gorgeous material. Picks up cherry pit and smoky aspects on the assertive, drawn-out and vivid finish. Easily a 15 year ager from vintage date but is very likable now if you want.’
