2012 VIETTI NEBBIOLO LANGE
'PERBACCO'
$23.99 BTL./$287.88 CASE

By now, many of you have heard the real backstory of this wine but it is always worth reiterating it. Barolo/Barbaresco in all but name, the Perbacco is a selection of juice and vineyards that show more readiness and drinkability.

"The 2012 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is fabulous. Floral and lifted, the 2012 is one of the more refined editions of Perbacco I can remember tasting. The flavors are bright, focused and beautifully articulated throughout. Chalky notes support a sculpted, brilliant finish laced with hints of orange peel, white pepper and crushed rocks. Simply put, I can't recommend the 2012 Perbacco highly enough. This is as good as it gets for the money. Perbacco is predominantly a blend of vineyards; four in Barolo and two in Barbaresco, including new parcels in Montaribaldi and Pajore. Can the 2012 Barolos be meaningfully better than this? - 92 POINTS, ANTONIO GALLONI, VINOUS MEDIA"

2013 VIETTI BARBERA D'ALBA
'TRE VIGNE'
$23.99 BTL./$287.88 CASE

It's always difficult to be objective when it comes to Vietti wines mainly because Luca & Elena Currado is such great friends, but in all honesty, these wines stand up and shout nothing but brilliant quality. As the name for this wine implies, this Barbera comes from 3 vineyard sites in the Alba region, specifically from Castiglione Faletto and Monforte, both superb Barolo villages, and Castiglione Tinella which is renowned for its superb Barbera. While many producers in Piedmont offer a Barbera as part of their lineup of wine, Luca and his family believe that Barbera is one of the great varietals of Italy. Once you have Vietti’s Barbera, you too will be convinced of the grand possibilities.

After tasting the newly arrived 2013 a few months back, I was convinced that I was drinking something that was way above the norm in both price and quality. 2013 is emerging as an outstanding, classic Piedmont vintage and this offering is a chiseled middleweight with refinement and aromatic class. Vertical and revealing lots of cherry pit and mineral with rosemary, spices and decidedly floral aspects joining in as it unfurls. A poetic, richly seductive texture that has a backdrop of dark chocolate fans out then finishes poised and very soothing with lots of extension. Risotto spiked with porcini, chanterelles and any other mushroom as well as hearty soups/stews or sausages will pair very well with this Barbera. Drink through 2021.

There is Barbera for everyday consumption and then there are Barbera wines for special occasions. Scarrone is magical. Vietti is undoubtedly one of the top two or three Barbera specialists in Italy and if you don't believe Barbera will not age, just make this claim. Luca has been known to uncork an older one just to prove it.

The Scarrone vineyard is a species all to itself. Located in prime Barolo-land, this site really produces majestic Barbera wines. So many of you are familiar with Vietti's wines and know how we feel about them and this offering just continues in the estate’s lineage of greatness. The 2012 Scarrone is red nectar that is exquisitely detailed and dramatic with alluring aromas of red plums, nutmeg, roses, mineral, smoke, and pepper. Mouth filling juice offering polished and refined flavors that cut through the deep layers or intense fruit. The finish is luxurious and super-long. This can be drunk now and it will easily develop through 2027. My East Coast roots come out every time I taste both of these Barbera wines, so I am not going to be a passive-aggressive Oregonian in their summation; these are some of the most iconic Barbera wines produced, period. Don’t miss them!

2011 VIETTI BAROLO
'CASTIGLIONE'
$46.99 BTL./$281.94 - SIX PACK

Undoubtedly, one of the most outstanding price/quality rapport Barolo wines that we feature every year! Vietti's Castiglione Barolo is way, way more than just an entry-level offering. In fact, this could be broken down by vineyard and Luca Currado could legitimately produce numerous different single cru wines from this. As a tribute to the generations before him, Luca takes all of these small lots, ferments them separately and then blends them into one hell of a serious Barolo that is a ridiculous steal for its price level!

From a warm vintage, there is immense full aspects to this Barolo and while there is quite a bit of attractriveness here now, this wine will mature into a beautiful butterfly filled with sottobosco, black licorice, mushroom and notes of ravishingly seductive floral cherry. Impressive material with loads of dimension on the nose with wonderful, ethereal elegance in the mouth and a refined, classic Barolo core carries through to a finish that sails gracefully in the mouth and lasts and lasts and lasts. No problem for 12-15 years from vintage date.
