2014 PRIEUR SANCERRE
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

The Prieur family have been growers in this famed Loire region for 11 generations and are cerebral assassins when it comes to this area’s famed Sauvignon Blanc. The obstacle course of soils (caillote, which is light limestone, silex flint and terre blanche clay/limestone) that this estate owns produces a novella of Sancerre terroir and is not a wine that reveals answers to your questions, but rather one whose complexity keeps you asking questions.

Above the norm, a virtual mosaic of aromas including mineral, iodine, brine, blossom, smoke, lemongrass and more mineral caress from the glass. In the mouth, this is lyrical Sancerre with prominent sophistication and never strays from its Sancerre sensibilities or paunchiness. The finish is classic, flinty, steely, soil driven and really hangs around making it a beautiful match with salmon but also will pair with halibut cheeks in sauce or a high-class goat cheese. Spoil yourselves, we insist!

2013 OWEN ROE SYRAH
'EX UMBRIS'
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

Ex Umbris is Latin for "out of the shadows", this wine was originally crafted to express the smoky notes imparted to the Syrah grapes by a raging wildfire. One of the characteristics of this noble grape is its inherent smokiness, a flavor that comes through even without Mother Nature's assistance.

Opaque and dense, this red is overflowing with the rich aromas and flavors of well-crafted Washington Syrah; white pepper, black raspberry, blueberry, chocolate and plenty of woodsmoke. Full and generous in the mouth, the layered fruit is joined by perfectly ripened tannins and exotic spices from the thoughtfully placed oak. Nice underlying structure and grip will allow it to age for 6-8 years, but you can easily uncork one tonight and pair it with barbecued ribs or grilled steak.

2013 CAMERON PINOT NOIR
'ARLEY'S LEAP'
$39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE

Arley's Leap Pinot Noir was created in the mid-90s. The base of the wine consists of clippings from Clos Electrique that were planted up at Abbey Ridge in 1990, this is the secret weapon in the Cameron arsenal of great Pinot Noirs.

The first aromas almost transport you to somewhere in the Cote-de-Beaune with its alluring, penetrating perfume of lavender, turned earth, rose petal, smoked herbs and subtle meaty tones. Cerebral and very suave, there are layers of sophistication and grace in the mouth. Beautifully expressed even now, we all know that Cameron’s Pinot Noirs age like beasts and this wine has a deceptive underbelly of structure and dimension that is going to reveal itself even further. Super-material on the drawn-out finish that is even-keeled and just waiting to unleash itself, the vinous, mouth-coating, sultry texture that is present on the entire palate truly belies its usual lower alcohol level. A terrific choice to drink as well as to put some away and enjoy over the next 10-12 years. 225 cases produced. Knockout juice from one of Oregon's masters…Bravo!!

2010 VAJRA BAROLO 'BRICCO DELLE VIOLE'
[reg. $99.99]
SPECIAL! $74.99 BTL.

96 POINTS - VINOUS

Over the last decade-plus, Aldo Vajra’s traditionally styled wines have become quite the talk of Piedmont. Located in the commune of Barolo, specifically the village of Vergne, the highest elevated village of this zone, these wines have impeccable quality to back up their stalwart reputation and accolades. Bricco delle Viole is one of Barolo village’s classic and most prized vineyard sites. Perched at 1250 feet up to 1500+ feet in the hills of Barolo, only the oldest and best vines (60+ years old) go into this limited production Barolo.

If you haven’t heard, 2010 is a monumental, very long-lived vintage for Barolo so if you have a reason to celebrate something down the road that occurred in 2010 this would certainly be a great choice. The aromas are very sultry, extensive, generous and yet youthfully rambunctious as is to be expected at this juncture. Perfumed rose petal and anise rule the moment with mineral and earth from traditional vinification weaving themselves in as it sits in the glass. Cherry licorice and more perfume arrives. Grand Cru penetration of fruit and detail permeate throughout this wine. Gripping, structured and compact texture that has waves of depth that will undoubtedly needs time to come out. Lots of vibrancy, buried tannins and spine on the excruciatingly long finish that is packed tight but lasts for an eternity. This wine needs to go into the cellar and be forgotten about at least until 2020 and then consumed through 2040. Also has a fat 96-point score from Antonio Galloni, Vinous.
