FRIDAY SIPS

FLAVORFUL RED ZINS

Today, June 29 from 3:30-6:30 PM

For those of you who aren't on holiday - Drop by to taste the 3 Zins listed below, all from renowned producers

2010 RIDGE PASO ROBLES ZINFANDEL
"DUSI RANCH"
$29.99 BTL./$359.88 CASE

Sensory overload Red Zins are as American as barbecue and trying to blow your fingers off with fireworks on the 4th of July – and it goes perfectly with both! From Yoda of Zin, Paul Draper and Ridge Vineyards, the 2010 Paso Robles bottling is yet again very outstanding. A broad-scaled vintage with extremely good quality, sadly the quantities are miniscule.

Ridge has been making Zin from Paso Robles's Dusi Ranch since 1967 from vines that were planted in 1924. Recently Bryan uncorked a 2007 version of this wine and it was scintillating. The 2010 will surpass it! Not only do the old vines make this wine special, limestone soils bring about energy and complexity to go along with the mighty core of fruit. 100% Zinfandel and loaded with large-scaled, rich, round plum and black cherry notes. Briar, smoke and Asian spice back up the full fruit. Impacting, ripe and generous flavors coat the palate then finish with lots of power, depth and vibrancy. This wine leaves an unmistakable impression that will enable one to release up any pent up hedonism that may be lurking below the surface! Drink through 2018+

2008 STORYBOOK MOUNTAIN NAPA ZINFANDEL
"MAYACAMAS RANGE"
$31.99 BTL./$383.88 CASE

Another California Zin legend and totally different than Paul Draper, Jerry Seps has been making remarkable Zins from Napa Valley since the mid-70s. For vintage 2008, this cat seemingly turned the volume up to 11 but also backed it up with a real complex side and this is all evidenced by receiving a 95 point score from Wine & Spirits. Mayacamas Range is Storybook's Napa Valley Estate which contains the first plots planted back in 1880. 2008 is one hell of a delicious effort. Savory earth, peppermint patty, sage, red plum and undertones of baked earth shine on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is chewy, full and ripe with Italian-like nuances, flavors and grip that build on the long and precise finish. Storybook Zins have a real tendency to age, but this one is in no way unapproachable now. Have it with stews and braised meat dishes over the next 8-10 years.

2010 MARIETTA SONOMA ZINFANDEL
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

"…Marietta Cellars doesn't have a tasting room or a wine club. We don't buy advertisements in wine magazines or enter wine competitions. We don't make "trophy wines" nor do we charge "trophy wine" prices. That being said, our wine is allocated on release due to demand and routinely sells out prior to the next release. Our wines don't sell because of ratings, because of the view from our tasting room, or because of a fancy label. Our wines sell because we make consistently great wine and we ask a very fair price." – The Bilbro Family

A blend of 3 of Sonoma's fine growing areas, primarily Alexander valley with dollops of Zin from Dry Creek and Russian River added in for complexity, power and vibrancy. A combination of black raspberry, strawberry/balsamico, sage and white pepper. Definitely not about being oaky…no now oak is utilized! Cinnamon-earth tones, plenty of penetration but ultimately this is about the engaging succulent fruit! Flavors come in waves and turn red and vibrant on the persistent, drawn-out finish that shows some mocha and is rich without being burdensome or thick. Beautiful to drink now and will age nicely for 4-6 years, too.
