"CALL THE BOOKIE, IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON" HOTSHEET - 91 point Rioja, Ken Wright, Vietti Barolo & more

2008 PALACIOS-REMONDO RIOJA CRIANZA "LA MONTESA"
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE
91 POINTS – THE WINE ADVOCATE

Since 1989 Alvaro Palacios has become Spanish wine royalty by being one of the influences having put two growing regions on the wine map, Priorat and Bierzo. What Alvaro has done with his family's Rioja estate in just over a decade is nothing less than extraordinary and one has to wonder how they can be of such great values given their apex quality. "…a blend 55% Tempranillo, 35% Garnacha and 10% Mazuelo, it has an uncomplicated, vanilla-tinged bouquet with ripe wild strawberry and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins and the oak (14 months in used French) is well-integrated, lending structure and backbone on the finish. It is very composed and well-crafted, worthy of cellaring for 3 to 5 years. – 91 POINTS - THE WINE ADVOCATE"

2011 KEN WRIGHT PINOT BLANC
$21.99 BTL./$263.88 CASE

Year in and year out, super-well-known with quality that's consistently at a top level is what makes Ken Wright's range of wines among Oregon's finest. Known as a Pinot Noir pioneer, Ken also produces a few white wines that are sizzling-good!! Rich and intense, but ample mineral and lift. From older vines from sites, Meredith Mitchell and Freedom Hill Vineyards, this number shows excellent fragrance; cereal, apple-cinnamon, engaging earth tones. High-quality richness along with rocket-like burst and freshness. Unfolds and expands on the long finish. A wonderful seafood wine!

2009 DOMAINE FILLIATREAU SAUMUR-CHAMPIGNY
"LA GRANDE VIGNOLLE"
$13.99 BTL./$167.88 CASE

Hey Kids this is Cabernet Franc, but what it really is, is Cabernet Franc with sass & soul! When poured in the glass, the hue of purple is stunningly gorgeous. Equally gorgeous are the aromas! One of the icon estates from an appellation that is not widely-known in America, Saumur-Champigny, Domaine Filliatreau makes exquisitely detailed and pure expressions of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc. Eschewing the use of oak, these neo-classical wines always possess soaring fruit, deep color and plenty of intensity without any make-up or lipstick. 2009 is a killer year for red Loire wines and this wine reveals black raspberry, sandalwood, pronounced sanguine aspects, jasmine and pepper that roll from the glass. More spice and intense aromas come on as it opens (we recommend using a Riedel Pinot Noir glass). Ardent and fruit-driven with plenty of soulful, mineral tones which bring brightness to the sumptuous finish. Have this wine with anything lamb, a chicken drumstick, duck, or (no joke) carnitas! This is total pleasure wine and is one that Parisians go bonkers over, especially given its insanely low price. Wines like this are the reason that Bryan loves France so much.

2008 VIETTI BAROLO
"CASTIGLIONE"
$44.99 BTL./$269.94 – SIX PACK CASE

The Castiglione Barolo is way, way more than just an entry-level offering. In fact, this could be broken down by vineyard and Luca could legitimately produce numerous different single cru wines from this. As a tribute to the generations before him, Luca takes all of these small lots, ferments them separately and then blends them into one hell of a serious Barolo that is a ridiculous steal for its price level! 2008 is the real deal and very classic in stature…the sad part is that there just isn't much quantity.

"The 2008 Barolo Castiglione is striking. Sweet red berries, freshly cut flowers, spices and mint are some of the many nuances that flow from this impeccable, mid-weight Barolo. The 2008 Castiglione impresses for its exceptional balance, polished finish and sheer beauty. This is a feminine Castiglione graced with exquisite class. With time in the glass, the wine fleshes out beautifully. Once again, the Castiglione delivers incredible value. In 2008 Vietti did not make their Villero Riserva, instead that juice went into the Castiglione. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. – 92 POINTS, THE WINE ADVOCATE"

2010 KELLEY FOX PINOT NOIR
"MIRABAI"
$31.99 BTL./$383.88 CASE

One of the cool new producers to Oregon, Kelley Fox has quickly established herself and her wines as definite contenders. The first of her new 2010s is quite remarkable and instantly popped a nice accolade as well.

"Incorporating two barrels from Momtazi south of McMinnville, but its majority from an old block of Pommard Selection at Maresh Vineyard that Fox to a considerable degree personally (and biodynamically) tends, her tiny volume of 2010 Mirabai Pinot Noir delivers bright, fresh cherry and elderberry with piquant citrus oil and cherry pit infusion and a mingling of marrowy-rich, multi-boned underlying meat stock. Silken-textured and terrifically persistent, this evinces a stony finishing undertone that Fox associates with the cool, stony rigors of the Momtazi site, and which sets-off the wine's purity and vividness of fruit in something analogous to the way that Mosel Riesling fruit can be set-off by its undertone of slate. At the same time, there is mouthwatering salinity that practically compels the next sip. I suspect this will be worth following for a decade. – 92 POINTS – THE WINE ADVOCATE"

2010 BUCCI VERDICCHIO CASTELLI DI JESI CLASSICO
SPECIAL PRICE - $19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

It's always difficult just to say who is best in any given wine-producing area, but there are always exceptions and Bucci is one of them! When it comes to Verdicchio and the Le Marches region, Bucci's Classico is better than just about anyone's Riserva! A small producer of 8,000 cases of three different wines, the 2010 Verdicchio Classico is all about the sea, this outstanding white wine is a tremendous match with anything that swims. Bone-crushing aromas of mineral, crustaceans, lemongrass, underlying yellow flowers, anise and limestone show off from the moment it is poured into the glass. In the mouth it presents laser-beam focus, terroir-specific, energetic and revealing plenty of old-vine depth and character all in a precise package…For a Jackson note one can experience one of Italy's great white wines and not only is it perfect for shellfish, it has the intensity to stand up to our delicious fall salmon.

2010 DOMAINE POUILLON "BLACK DOT" RED
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE
Over the last decade we've seen the small Columbia Gorge town of Lyle, WA become home to three dynamic producers. We have promoted the Cor and Syncline wines in the past and this is our first go at Domaine Pouillon. Alexis Pouillon has had the wine bug since 1994 and after doing an apprenticeship at Chateau de Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape this brought him to the Columbia Gorge to follow his passion. The 2010 Black Dot is a sumptuous blend (which changes every vintage) of 50% Zinfandel, 20% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington's Horse Heaven Hills region. Deep currants, savory herbs, chocolate licorice and underlying smoky-spicy aspects come and come as the wine unfolds in the glass. Flavorful, generous yet maintaining excellent elevation and balance; mouthwatering and smooth from the alluring entry all the way to the nicely formed finish.

2010 SANTO CRISTO CAMPO DE BORJA GARNACHA "SELECCION"
$7.99 BTL./$95.88 CASE

The Aragon region of Spain, specifically the region of Campo de Borja, is Spain's wine Thrift Store! Lots of gulpable treasures made with Garnacha are found here including this miraculous $8 winner! This is your favorite barbecue wine...you just haven't tasted it yet! Lavishly toned wild strawberry jam scents play off savory herbs, spices and licorice following into a texture that is supple and mouth-coating, but possesses plenty of the nice peppery tones that Garnacha brings. Drink this vivid Spanish red with just about anything from the grill.
