January is the best month to order wine. Wanting to make numbers, our local distributor rolled the price back on this perennial Cellar Door choice from Spain’s Bierzo region.
93 Points – The Wine Advocate…Alvaro and Riccardo Palacios’ s impact on Bierzo cannot be overemphasized. Twenty-five years ago, they resurrected and saved this region then succeeding in becoming one of Spain’s great growing areas. Mostly Mencia. Seemingly inspired by St-Joseph meeting Southern Beaune crossed with a little Eastern Italy smoky coriander, perfumed red and black plum are augmented by mineral and pristine cranberry-like freshness. Loaded with class and finely sculpted, pair with smoked sausages & lentils, albondigas (Spanish meatballs), Manchego, BBQ chicken and more.

From the Savoie region of Abymes, this brisk white checks in at a mere 11.5% alcohol and goes down way too easily.
100% of the Alpine grape called Jacquere, alluring aromas of freshly cut white flowers, melon, mandarin, mineral and white licorice shine. The explosion on the nose follows through to the mouth with blitzing, crisp mouthwatering tones that show excellent intensity from old vines and sustainable farming. The finish is nakedly pure and super-long, enjoy it with clams, trout, goat cheese and given the acidity, macaroni and cheese.

A love ballad to Washington Cabernet, L’Ecole No. 41’s 2022 is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from twelve topnotch Washington vineyards.
Revealing classic varietal Cabernet profile, it is lushly structured, integrated and emphasizing, blackberry, cassis and mocha/mint aromas with giving flavors that are supple with refined, dusty tannins and a drawn-out finish. L'Ecole Nº 41 has been producing this excellent Cab since 1989, and it is always a wonderful value. Delicious in its youth, it also has aging potential. Drink through 2034.

We love Sancerre but we do not love the prices and there are no expectations of relief coming, especially due to the National Sales Tax and now Taylor Swift bestowing favorite wine status on the wines. Located across the Loire River, Pouilly-Fume is less known but more than not, has even higher quality. Although similarities usually outweigh the differences, Pouilly-Fume often has more depth, smoky complexity and is one of the world’s finest food wines.
Domaine des Fines Caillottes is named after the white pebbles spread throughout the soils. Made without the use of oak it is tense, refined, dry and laden with multi-faceted citrus fruit like grapefruit and orange. The bottom line really is the soil responsible for defining the fruit and stony, flinty character throughout the wine, specifically on the considerably long finish.

Following our refrain of embracing all Pinot Noir growing regions due to most being small in land mass, we are off to New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Statuesque Pinots emerge from this area but never lose their grace and dimension.
A go-to producer for her white wines, Jules Taylor also makes delicious Pinots. All about accessibility, an aura of smoky spice is nicely wrapped around bold, spicy cherry/raspberry notes that dominate the nose. Cinnamon stick and freshly ground black pepper add to the wine’s complexity. Good poise on the nose and mouth with stylish depth, concentration and nice structure. Finishes with bounteous expansion and notes of raspberries, earth and nutmeg. As Jules says, gather the troops and grab a glass!

We are committed to offering at least one selection that sells for less than fifteen dollars on our weekly wine sheets and this Douro region red from Portugal is so tasty.
A scrumptious everyday drinker filled with dark berry tones and hints of savory herbs. Succulent in the mouth, it shares aspects of cinnamon, earth, and pepper on the finish. A fun red to try with an array of cheeses, meats and good company.

To put things into perspective and to show just how small the Cornas appellation truly is – the small Dundee Hills appellation in Oregon is just under 1200 acres. Cornas in its entirety is just under four hundred on some of the steepest slopes imaginable.
A Northern Rhone legend, the current version of the Les Chailles Cornas is uptown for vintage 2022 as less Vieilles Vignes and no Chapelle St-Pierre was produced. Good chunks of those selections went into this wine. Starts off reticent before unfurling and giving off initial black cherry, smoked sausage, cedar box, turned earth, sous bois and just the right amount of a pekoe note. A youthful but sensuous core of fruit embraces the palate, gaining vibrancy and youthful spine culminating in a coating, linear with radiant persistence. Not a crime if you uncork one early but for best results, cellar it for another 2-3 years drink it through 2037.

No hyperbole, but this is the best Amarone deal available in Portland today. Amarone's popularity has launched the prices for the area's top wines into orbit, and this one is remarkable for under fifty bucks!
Tenuta Sant’Antonio is a young estate, founded in 1995. In thirty years, they have announced their presence with stellar wines. The Castagnedi Amarone aged in 500-liter barrels which enhances the maintenance of soul. This hearty version serves up blackberry, tobacco, raisin, almond, spice, mineral and chinato-like herb aromas. On the palate it is dense with depth sweeping across the palate concluding with a magnificent aftertaste confirming all the attributes of the nose. Not undrinkable early, it will age quite well, too. Decant if opening and have it with a heavy risotto dish, osso buco, or grab a hunk of Gorgonzola.
