2009 LE VELETTE ROSSO ORVIETANO "SPICCA"
$11.99 BTL./$143.88 CASE
$11.99 BTL./$143.88 CASE
The family owned estate of Le Velette lies high on some of the most coveted land in the heart of Orvieto Classico in Umbria and the winemaking tradition here dates back to the Etruscans. The 2009 Spicca is mostly Sangiovese grown at 1000 feet in volcanic soils and if it were from Tuscany, you can bet it wouldn't be 12 bucks. Lifting aromas of juicy strawberry, game, sage, white flowers and blueberry move nicely into the round and friendly mouthfeel; this fleshy, crunchy red is the perfect accompaniment to pizza, meatloaf, simple red-sauced pasta dishes or as owner Corrado Bottai says, "have a few glasses while you are cooking the meal with a hunk of good pecorino cheese."
2011 GIESEN SAUVIGNON BLANC
$9.99 BTL./$119.88 CASE
$9.99 BTL./$119.88 CASE
A long-time Cellar Door favorite from New Zealand, Giesen's mouthwatering 2011 Sauvignon Blanc is very brisk, only seeing stainless steel tanks and never the inside of a dreaded barrel. Pristine aromatics featuring citrus fruits, mineral, and a touch of passion fruit, it follows through to a texture that's clean and piercing with grapefruit, lemon, lime, and a touch of spice. This is about as refreshing as it gets! For all those looking for a great bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, drink Giesen!!
2008 MUGA RIOJA RESERVA
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE
Legendary. Influential. God-like Genius. Quite honestly, there aren't enough hyperbolic words to describe both the wines of Muga and what this producer has meant to the quality and history of the Rioja wine region. Once again they deliver and their 2008 Reserva is drop-dead stunning. Mocha-spiked dried strawberries lavishly waft from the glass with Moroccan spices; leather and roasted earth are along for the ride. Captivating, majestic, mouth-filling, very smooth and gaining complexity as it unfolds in the glass. Lots of movement throughout as well as a drawn-out, silky finish with slight peppery tones make this a compelling wine for 20 bucks. Drink it over the next 10-15 years with roasted pork or lamb. If you like scores, this wonderful Rioja has 91 points from The Wine Advocate.
2011 DOMAINE DES CHERS JULIENAS
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE
One of the 10 Cru of Beaujolais, Julienas takes its name from Julius Caesar and the growers believe that the area was the site of the first vineyards planted in Beaujolais after the Romans conquered Gaul. This is always one of the more masculine Crus and 2011 is the third in the "tantalizing trifecta" of Beaujolais vintages. 100% Gamay, this wine comes from a St-Amour specialist, however, they never sacrifice the spice and grip of the terroir. Packed with peonies, anise, vibrant berry and prominent granitic spice-mineral aspects. The texture is penetrating and airy combined with excellent fruit, movement and persistence. Try with roasted poultry with mushrooms, salmon or soft-ripened cheeses.
2010 RIDGE PASO ROBLES ZINFANDEL
"DUSI RANCH"
$29.99 BTL./$359.88 CASE
$29.99 BTL./$359.88 CASE
Ridge has been making Zin from Benito Dusi's Ranch in Paso Robles since 1967 from vines that were planted in 1924. Earlier this year Bryan uncorked a 2007 vintage of this wine and it was scintillating - the 2010 will surpass it! Not only do the old vines make this wine special, limestone soils bring about energy and complexity to go along with the mighty core of fruit. 100% Zinfandel and loaded with large-scaled, rich, round plum and black cherry notes. Briar, smoke and Asian spice back up the full fruit. Impacting, ripe and generous flavors coat the palate then finish with lots of power, depth and vibrancy. This wine leaves an unmistakable impression that will enable one to release up any pent up hedonism that may be lurking below the surface! Drink through 2018+
2000 QUINTA DA BACALHOA MOSCATEL DE SETUBAL
$24.99 BTL
$24.99 BTL
Following Muga on a hot sheet isn't exactly an easy thing to live up to, but the equally influential Portuguese estate of Bacalhoa does it quite well. Not only are they known for their smashing Cabernet Sauvignon, this estate has produced a plethora of top-level sweet wines for what seems to be eons from the estate on the Setubal Peninsula.
Made from a single vintage and 100% Moscatel (Muscat) grape that is aged 8 years in oak before release, it is almost akin to a tawny port, yet has its own aromatic and flavor profile. A big amber color with aromas of toffee, dried oranges, roses, smoked nuts, honey and caramel that really entice. Full of flavor, richness, finely grained acids to buffer the sweetness and a lengthy nutty finish, this is the penultimate fortified match to go with chocolate. A 750 ML bottle will serve a hell of a lot of people and the good thing is that one doesn't have to consume it all in one sitting. Again, if scores are your thing, this one has 92 points from The Wine Advocate.
