OREGON PINOT VALUES INCLUDING SHEA
Wednesday Wine from The Cellar Door featuring Stevenson-Barrie
Michael Stevenson, former winemaker at Panther Creek and current winemaker at Elizabeth Chambers Cellars has been producing a small amount of wine under his own label for over a decade. Utilizing some of the same vineyards that Panther Creek once utilized (Shea, Freedom Hill & Vista Hills), these are fantastic expressions of the diversity of Oregon's terroirs. Freedom Hill Vineyard is located in the foothills of the coast range 10 miles southwest of Salem, in the warmer Eola Hills area. This site, protected from strong coastal winds by hills to the east benefits from heat rising off the valley floor.
This delicious offering is full, rich and very well structured. Tightly focused aromas of ripe black raspberry, cherry, violet, anise, licorice whip and cardamom...this pinot is aromatically stunning! Firm and gripping in the mouth with generosity and great purity of flavor. The material here is undeniably impressive. Michael always will tell you that Freedom Hill is usually the last to come around as far as drinkability and in 2012 my gut tells me that this may well turn out to be the champion of the line-up! Drink through 2025+.

Vista Hills is a site that more folks need to know about, especially given their prime Dundee Hills location. Situated just below Domaine Drouhin and Domaine Serene, this vineyard not only delivers beautiful Pinots under their own label but also sells grapes to others.
Built around lavender and floral tones, lavish complexity and detail are artistically present, especially up-front. Less spicy than the offerings listed above, this offering is creamy, fine and possessing excellent movement, balance and concentrated strawberry fruit that is almost cushiony. Precise and lifting, plenty of red earth weave through the stirring, lasting and very poised, relaxed finish that goes on and on then snaps back and soars. Drink through 2025+.

Located in the Yamhill-Carlton zone, Russell-Grooters vineyard is one of the up and coming, excellent sites that we will see in Oregon. Planted in 2003, Michael has announced his presence with one hell of a terroir driven Pinot by producing a wonderful wine.
Youthful and captivating on the nose and no shortage of multi-faceted fruit on the palate. Notes of black raspberry, black licorice and subtle strawberry that go along with good structure, allspice and earth tones. Expansive and well-honed with nicely integrated high notes, especially on the lingering, packed finish. The largest of the lineup, this is flat-out delicious juice. Drink through 2025.

Shea Vineyard is one of Oregon's most important and popular vineyard sites and Michael Stevenson has been working with this fruit for a long, long time. The accumulated knowledge of this site really makes this affordable version of Shea really shine beautifully, especially for the much hyped 2012 vintage.
The pinot noir from this site always gives alluring floral notes of violet, jasmine and lilac. The high quality of the 2012 vintage adds a core of full, ripe blackberry fruit, with exotic warm spices and a long lively finish. One might think that this site is only about elegance, with its alluring perfume and suave personality, this pinot seduces you like a good Barry White tune, but do not be fooled, there is power, earth and density behind its velvety robe. Drink through 2025.
