2020 BASTIDE BLANCHE BANDOL ROSE
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE

Rose is now taking on a different vibe these days with the variances of styles. I often categorize Rose into two types, rose pour la terrasse et rose pour le repas. Bandol certainly isn’t a Rose for the porch, it is one to have with a meal. Good Southern French Rose should have good character and esteem and one region that always does is Bandol.

Bastide Blanche is a longtime Cellar Door icon and always offers up outstanding value given its over-the-top quality, maintaining an undervalued price for years. 72% Mourvedre, 17% Cinsault & 11% Grenache, the 2020 Bandol Rose is mouth filling, yet fresh, with meaty notes of baked red apple, apricot and wild strawberry intertwined with alluring spice and seashore aspects. Cool and uplifting notes bring it all into balance, the word yum is written all over my notes from tasting it about a month ago. This is a rose for pork dishes, herb encrusted goat cheeses and rich seafood dishes such as grilled salmon or a classic bouillabaisse or paella and is one that drinks and improves over several years. We never tire of talking about great wine and when it is a fantastic Bandol Rose for under-30, we acquire our own stash then we yell it from the rooftops loud enough so you can hear.

2016 BERTAINE SOAVE
'ORIGINAL VINTAGE EDITION'
$24.99 BTL./$149.94 - SIX PACK

One of the great ambassadors of Amarone, Bertani, also makes impressive wines from Soave. Two wines are produced and this one is like their Original Vintage Edition red, which takes a bit of the modern and combines with ancient methods of the Bertani ancestors. For this white wine, the estate brought back the traditional Soave style for the OVE by vinifying 60% of the grapes following red winemaking techniques (ripasso), which bring out aromatics and natural delicacy of the white Garganega grape. The aim is a re-production of a Soave according to a style and taste of an earlier age, even down to the original 1930s package – all details that make this a truly vintage product.

Sterling aromatics swirl from the glass with notes of mineral, lemon, white flowers and mushroom. There is a deep level of old-vine concentration that is mouth-coating and rich yet it is bone dry, with excruciatingly refreshing citrus notes of lemon, lime, tangerine, and even more mineral with the earth lingering beneath. This wine is a testament to old vines and beautiful artisanship and knowing when to let your site and technique speak for themselves.

2020 CARREL JONGIEUX BLANC
$11.99 BTL./$143.88 CASE

From the Savoie region of Jongieux, this low-alcohol (11.5%) white wine epitomizes the essence of the term summer-slammer! Made with 100% of the ever-popular Jacquère grape, this gushing Alpine-waterfall of a white is more intense and complex than one would ever imagine at its modest alcohol level.

Alluring aromas of freshly cut white flowers, melon, mandarin, mineral and white licorice, the intensity and explosiveness on the nose follows through to the mouth with dry, brisk, mouthwatering tones that show excellent intensity from old vines and sustainable farming. The finish is nakedly pure and super-long; enjoy it with grilled shrimp or just by itself.

2018 DOMAINE CHAPUIS
MACON-MANCEY ROUGE
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

On occasion, we are ahead of the times when it comes to wine selections. About eight years ago, we introduced this rare red wine from Burgundy’s Macon region and the slow build started. Fast forward and we now have access to several but it still goes back to the OG version that we love so much, and given the heat of 2018, this plays very well into this savory red wine’s character.

Unlike the majority of wines from Burgundy that are Pinot Noir, this is Gamay but grown in clay and limestone. An attacking spiciness is followed by cherry, plum and black peppercorn scents. Lively, vivid, and with sneaky volume this wine is vin de soif. Drink it with a slight chill in the hotter months with a charcuterie plate, turkey/pesto/provolone sandwich, or even a gazpacho. When the weather cools down then it is perfect foil for barbecued chicken legs or a lighter veggie/mushroom pasta or rice dish.

2019 BROADBENT DOURO TINTO
$11.99 BTL./$143.88 CASE

Son of famed, late, great British Master of Wine and author Michael Broadbent, Bartholomew Broadbent has brilliantly made his mark in Portugal with Ports, Vinho Verde and dry reds including this tasty value red.

A blend of grapes used for Port (Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca) and made into a DRY red, it reveals raspberry, a little bit of smoke and spice box. Ripe, chewy red fruits integrate nicely with subtle coriander tones. The finish is wild with a little game and plenty of bright flavors and briary spiciness. This would pair well with lamb chops, although I could envision myself throwing down a bottle of this fun wine back with a cheeseburger.

2019 CRISTOM VIOGNIER
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE

From an exciting and influential Oregon producer in Oregon's Eola-Amity region comes thus varietally strong Viognier that is nothing but the truth for a New World version. Encouraged by his love of Calera’s Viognier and Condrieu, which was made by current Cristom winemaker Steve Doerner, founder Paul Gerrie planted 1.25 acres of this grape in 1993 and was one of the first to have it under vine in the Willamette Valley.

The 2019 offers fresh cut rose and melon aromas which give way to creamy apricot, spice and mineral aspects then carry over into a generous, viscous texture that is braced with excellent citrusy acidity. Finishes spicy and palate-coating, this wine is a perfect ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) number that will go wonderfully with smoked salmon, grilled sturgeon and other fleshy fishes.

2018 CHERON GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN
'LES SEUVREES'
$65.99 BTL./$395.94 - SIX PACK

Philippe Cheron is the epitome of Burgundy. Flying under the radar, this man hit the vineyard lottery when he inherited old vineyards from his grandparents that were leased by other luminous producers. When the leases were up, Philippe reclaimed the sites and we are all the better for it.

This vineyard located in southern portion of Gevrey-Chambertin just below Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru. Streamlined with aromatic burst. Sensual spice and developing cinnamon. Lacy, but dense fruit, indicative of plush, powerful, but debonair 2018 vintage. Sleek, silky entry and with much more red flavors than the black fruit dominated nose lets on. Youthful and all in back of mouth right now with killer extension. Hold this until 2023 and drink through 2032.

2017 VIETTI BAROLO 'CASTIGLIONE'
$49.99 BTL./$299.94 - SIX PACK

Undoubtedly, one of the most outstanding price/quality rapport Barolo wines that we feature every year! Vietti's Castiglione Barolo is way, way more than just an entry-level offering. In fact, this could be broken down by vineyard and Luca Currado could legitimately produce numerous different single cru wines from this. As a tribute to the generations before him, Luca takes all of these small lots, ferments them separately and then blends them into one hell of a serious Barolo that is a ridiculous steal for its price level!

From a warm vintage, there are immense full aspects to this Barolo and while there is quite a bit of attractiveness here now, this wine will mature into a beautiful butterfly filled with sottobosco, black licorice, mushroom and notes of ravishingly seductive floral cherry. Impressive material with loads of dimension on the nose with wonderful, ethereal elegance in the mouth and a refined, classic Barolo core carries through to a finish that sails gracefully in the mouth and lasts and lasts and lasts. No problem for 12-15 years from vintage date.
