Il Noce di Montalcino
Today June 3 from 1:30 - 6:30
Pancetta will be in the house for this special Friday Tasting pouring 4 smashing wines from Montalcino including two Brunello. If you love these wines here’s your chance to have four in one Friday tasting.
A stellar June price for a stellar wine from a favorite Brunello producer! Located south of the town of Montalcino in the hamlet of Sant' Angelo in Colle, Col D'Orcia has been an important and well-run Montalcino property for over 30 years. The style here is one of tradition and purity, ultimately meaning that these certainly aren’t farcical, Californicated Brunello or Rosso di Montalcino wines.
As usual, the 2012 Col D'Orcia Rosso di Montalcino outclasses many producers' Brunello di Montalcino. Full-on fragrant savory aromas leap from the glass. Packed with violet, red berry, sage and underbrush aromas, this wine emits its Sangiovese and Montalcino character. Typical of a Col D'Orcia wine, there is remarkable depth and personality in the mouth along with their telltale virtuosity, Italian tanginess and a well-formed finish that is full of snap and extension. Drink over the next 4-6 years.

If one were to make a statement in regards to Montalcino’s 2011 vintage, I suppose one could say that they are terrific wines to drink while one is patient to allow the 2010s to come to fruition. However, when it comes to Col D’Orcia’s 2011, this statement could go out the window on to Barbur Blvd. and straight under the Number 12 bus because this is going to be one of the wines of the vintage!
The luxury cuvee Poggio Al Vento isn’t slated to be produced for 2011 so after tasting, the assumption is that it is within this cuvee. Violets, roses, sage, and kirsch scents lead into a surprisingly inviting texture that is round, very generous, warm, nicely integrated and showing a rich middle with deceptive structure for aging. The close is very voluptuous and its superb length is quite a surprise given the vintage. Like other 2011s, there is depth of forward fruit here that allows for accessibility but ultimately this will be at its pinnacle from 2018 – 2029.

Also Located south of the town of Montalcino, but not as far south as Col D’Orcia, Caprili's Rosso is always a steal! For years, we have been proudly featuring and enjoying the entire range of wines from this stalwart Brunello producer whose prices are always outstanding due to a long-time direct relationship that Todd ‘Pancetta’ Bacon has had with the estate.
2013 is seductive, suave and packed with lots of Sangiovese depth and personality. Full on, fragrant savory aromas leap from the glass offering up violet, red berry, sage and underbrush aromas. Classy throughout with depth and personality in the mouth along with Caprili’s telltale smoothness, Italian tanginess arrives on the nicely formed finish that is full of snap and extension. This delicious red is everything that one should love about drinking fine Tuscan wines!

Like Col D’Orcia’s Brunello, the Caprili version also over-delivers in the 2011 vintage and breaks many stereotypes. Very extroverted, flirtatious blonde-bombshell aromas of flamboyant Italian plum, licorice, amare and sweet Tuscan herbs, this statuesque Brunello is broad, yet very pure and not succumbing to the temptations of small French barrique.
From start to finish, there is brilliant complexity to this wine. Exuberant, yet posh on the palate with a rich core of fruit that balances the fine-grained tannins beautifully. A true to form wine closing with flavors that keep going and seemingly snap back with a second finish, all of which is a statement to the great success that Caprili put forth in 2011. Surprisingly approachable now with a hearty meal but will continue to gain in complexity over the next 10-12 years.
