2015 PAOLO SCAVINO
LANGHE NEBBIOLO
$23.99 BTL./$287.88 CASE

In existence since 1921, this estate has always been a proud player within the Barolo village of Castiglione Falletto. From the late ‘80s until the mid-‘00s, the wines followed a trend of being made in a sleek modern style with an abundance of small French barrels. As trends come and go, this style of Barolo and Piedmont wine has fallen out of fashion and sisters Elisa and Enrica along with papa Enrico commenced on a reversion to tradition but with all of the knowledge that was picked up while being a modernista. I love to refer to these wines as classic, but clean.

The 2015 Nebbiolo comes from two single vineyards in the Barolo village of La Morra, Bricco Manescotto and Annunziata. This particular village always accentuates the aromatic, seductive side of the grape. Persistently aromatic scents of strawberry licorice, rose, tar and spice follow through to a finely detailed texture that is essence of what Nebbiolo is and should be. Classy and thought provoking, elegant and full all at once, this classy red can be consumed over the next 6-8 years. Have it with braised lamb or beef in a red wine (preferably Nebbiolo) sauce.

2013 MAURO MOLINO BAROLO
[reg. $49.99]
SPECIAL - drop by today for price

January is the month for wine deals. Here’s one on a superb 2013 (a 5-star vintage) Barolo from a wonderful family with the price that has been considerably clipped down. La Morra is the home for refined and sophisticated Barolo. Don't be fooled, these wines pack plenty of punch and we have been proudly featuring them for almost two decades. Since 1978 Mauro Molino, father of Matteo and Martina who now are at the helm, has produced wines that can best be described as neo-classical. Wines that are produced using appropriate technology to maintain the flavors of the region.

Intensely aromatic, this Barolo is telltale La Morra with its perfumed rose petal and red licorice tones. At this time it is quite wrapped up into itself but a sultry beast is lurking beneath with blaring signs of greatness; dense clay, asphalt, dark Belgian chocolate and a deep core of red fruit. Wonderfully intense in the mouth with fine structure. This classic and elegant Barolo is marked by gorgeous mouthfilling flavors that carry over seamlessly from the nose. We're opening it today but for best results, give it until the end of 2019 and then have fun through 2028.

2016 OLIM BAUDA GAVI DI GAVI
$16.99 BTL./$101.94 - SIX PACK

There is Gavi and then there is Gavi made specifically from the commune of Gavi, the traditional area in Piedmont for the Cortese grape. Grown at 1000 feet in the Gavi region of Piemonte, this devastatingly delicious white wine at 12.5% alcohol is a righteous choice for many who appreciate and love brisk, pure and unoaked white wines.

The clay & marl-based soils shine however; powdery citrus (lime) scents intermingle nicely with mineral on the nose and carry over to an attacking texture that has no shortage of thrust and saline qualities. Lovely briskness buffers the surprisingly penetrating components, especially on the finish. This blazing white absolutely screams out for crab…although mussels or a seafood risotto with green vegetables will do extremely well.

2016 MAURO MOLINO
BARBERA D'ASTI 'LERADICI'
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

A new wine from Molino family. Leradici, meaning the roots, is a single vineyard in Costigliole d’Asti that was purchased in 2015. One of the superb villages for Barbera in the Asti zone, this wine comes from 20-40 year old vines and is a remarkable score for its price point.

A cacophony of ripe, deep aromas and flavors with truffle, violet, cocoa and exotic spice, the 2016 Molino Barbera D'Asti reveals palate-coating flavors that are vivacious and pleasing. All makes this the perfect wine for hearty fare such as braised or slow roasted meats, or try it with a three-cheese pizza of grana padana, pecorino, Reggiano and a hefty drizzle of white truffle oil. If scores are your thing, 93 POINTS - The Wine Spectator.
