2014 SEVEN OF HEARTS PINOT NOIR
WILLAMETTE VALLEY
$21.99 BTL./$263.88 CASE

For vintage 2014, here in Oregon it was quite easy for wines to go awry with higher alcohol levels and sappy fruit. Fortunately, there are producers like Byron Dooley at Seven of Hearts who prefer to maintain symmetry and pure Pinot character within their wines.

Violet, plum, lavender, red licorice, kisses of tarragon and cinnamon/red-hot candies follow through to a succulent, sultry texture with deceptive depth, poise and material. Like any superb Pinot Noir, this wine fans out nicely on the palate, extends beautifully, and sticks around. A steal of a top-notch Oregon Pinot Noir, this wine can easily be enjoyed now and over the next 5+ years.

2013 SEVEN OF HEARTS 'TRADITION'
COLUMBIA VALLEY RED
$17.99 BTL./$215.88 CASE

We have known for many years that Byron Dooley is an Oregon Pinot Noir badass but if you were ever to visit his tasting room, you would see that he works with grapes from both Oregon and Washington. Wine passion seemingly runs through this most excellent human being’s veins and whether the inspiration is Rhone, Madiran, Burgundy or Bordeaux like this offering, quality always comes to the forefront with his wines.

The 2013 Tradition is a classic Right Bank Bordeaux blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 55% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc hailing from Stonehenge and Hellsgate Vineyards from both sides of the Columbia River in the Columbia Valley, this flavorful wine exudes class. Lavish and undervalued, this blend not only has depth and fruit it also has a sneaky backbone for aging. Silky and mouth filling and one that with 33% new French oak, isn't a lumber fest. Layered, well-detailed flavors and aromas of cassis, blueberry, smoke, huckleberry and cocoa-powder reveal a lovely texture that fans out nicely from start to finish. Drink now through 2021. 273 cases produced.

2014 SEVEN OF HEARTS
VIOGNIER-ROUSSANNE
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

Located in Carlton, Byron Dooley's Seven of Hearts operation is quite impressive. Making upwards of 30 different selections all in miniscule parcels, this small operation has grape sources in both Oregon and Washington. The grapes for this Rhone-inspired white wine come from the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge appellation just outside of Arlington, Oregon.

Notes from Byron: '65% Viognier/35% Roussanne. Fermented in three separate lots for complexity and diverse character: a co-ferment in stainless, Viognier in small stainless barrels, and Roussanne in neutral French oak barrels. The Viognier provides tropical and floral notes, as well as the overall weight, with the Roussanne contributing structure, acidity, diverse fruit elements, along with a distinctive ginger spiciness.'

2014 LUMINOUS HILLS
PINOT NOIR 'ASTRA'
$39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE

Luminous Hills is Byron's estate vineyard and after walking through this vineyard, one sees why Byron planted here and the sheer diversity of the terroir of his site. Ranging from 600 feet in elevation up to 800, 2 different soil types are present along with both Pommard and Dijon clones. With its rocky underbelly and high elevation, this estate vineyard is all about bringing forth essence of elegance.

From Byron: ‘The 2014 Astra is drawn from five barrels in the southeast facing blocks at Luminous Hills, and exclusively from the 667 and 115 clones. The 667 on upper elevation Jory volcanic soil delivers more ethereal nuanced qualities, while the 115 from the lower elevation sedimentary soil provides darker fruit underpinnings and spicier notes. The 2014 Astra is a wine with dramatic aromatics and expression. 123 cases produced.’

2014 LUMINOUS HILLS
PINOT NOIR 'LUX'
$39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE

The other excellent Reserve wine from Byron’s estate Luminous Hills Vineyard is called Lux and is a completely different expression than the Astra yet of equal profundity. From Byron: ‘The 2014 Lux is comprised of six barrels selected from Luminous Hills, with an emphasis on the lower elevation Pommard on sedimentary soil providing the darker fruit and bass notes. Complementary elegant red fruit from the 777 at higher elevation on Jory volcanic soil makes the wine complete and gives the wine balance. The Lux is a rich, hearty, and voluptuous Pinot Noir. 147 cases produced.’
