2017 J. PALACIOS BIERZO 'PETALOS'
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

Perhaps the leading candidate for “most popular wine from an unlikely region,” many of our friends have bought and enjoyed previous versions of Alvaro and Riccardo Palacios’s wine from the remote and exciting region of Bierzo. It is now time to step up and grab the sterling 2017!

One of the world’s most terrific values, this wine has a bit of something for everyone. Loaded with scents of cinnamon, clove, plum, some roasted earth and chocolate licorice, this wine unfolds as it aerates in the glass. The texture is large, but very poised and proper. Gracing its way to the finish, this Spanish treat is an absolute pleasure with pork dishes. As many of you have experienced in the past, Palacios Petalos Bierzo is imminently drinkable and lovable…and certainly in-demand. Order yours today. If you like scores, this has 93 points from The Wine Advocate.

2018 TOUR DE BON BANDOL ROSE
[reg. $32.99]
SPECIAL - $19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

Think about this when you want upcoming new releases of Rose wines: Many will be tariffed and the recent currency slip will all have them priced a bit higher. Interesting enough is that we found this excellent producer’s Bandol sitting out there at a special price. Remember, Bandol isn’t necessarily at its best in its first year but is often glorious in years two and three and Tour du Bon’s is no exception.

With turning the clocks ahead as well as the equinox a few days away, it is more than okay to conjure up thoughts of delicious dry pink wines. Directly pressed, sans malo-lactic fermentation and from sheer limestone on a plateau in the Bandol region, there is not only ample depth and personality, there is lightning in the bottle. Aromatically expressive, illuminating and glowing from the glass, there is an abundance of strawberry, mineral and savory fennel notes. In the mouth, it is intense, elevated, super-succulent and inviting from start to finish. Drink over the next year with savory fish dishes loaded up with some sort of tomato based salsa.

2018 KELLEY FOX PINOT NOIR 'MIRABAI'
$34.99 BTL./$419.88 CASE

To honor women for International Women’s Day as well as to honor our dear friend Kelley Fox, we are offering up her latest and greatest release of Mirabai Pinot Noir. One of the most stealth yet one of Oregon’s most respected and profound producers, it has been a joy to watch as Kelley has grown her operation and continues to make kickass wines.

A couple of changes occurred for Mirabai in 2018. One of which is the new label and the other being the addition of fruit from Dundee’s Weber Vineyard. A grand vintage indeed, this is 60% from Weber Vineyard planted in 1983 with the other 40% from Maresh plots ranging from 1970 to 1991. From the soul of Oregon's earth, this Pinot Noir reflects the realness of the superb land that it is grown on yet also reflects the mind behind the making. Genuine Pinot here with seductive aspects, it is cerebral and not a deeply colored, caricature version that pairs well with a pack of Kools. Instead, this wine has all the hallmarks of beauty with rose-petal, crunchy and not jammy strawberry, subtle pepper and underlying jasmine/mineral aromas which dominate the nose. Ethereal flavors that are caressing, silky and vivid fan out and flow on through to the impressively long, airy finish that also provides pleasurable snap-back. The structure of this vintage presents itself on the very long finish. While one could uncork a bottle, I would recommend giving it another 2-3 years then enjoying through 2030.

2018 GIUSEPPE NADA NEBBIOLO
$14.99 BTL./$179.88 CASE

There is overwhelming excitement in Barbaresco. A number of growers whose wines are on the upswing and may or may not have been brought in for one reason or another are now being discovered. One of the three main villages of Barbaresco, (along with Neive and Barbaresco) Treiso is now being recognized and its terroirs being shown by the many young producers in this area. Stereotypically, Barbaresco and Treiso are about elegance while Neive is power but that changes within the obstacle course of terroirs and these traits are often belied.

Estate bottling since 1964, Guiseppe Nada’s land is 15 acres, all in Treiso. Aged in 1000 liter casks, the 2018 Nebbiolo is very small production (8000 bottles) and is mostly from the Barbaresco Cru of Marcarini and often blended with the estate’s other two Cru sites’ younger vines . For those who have never had Nebbiolo, this is a terrific, above the norm starting point. For those who love Piedmont's grand grape; you will find impeccable value here. Driving aromas of rose petal, licorice, underbrush and subtle spiced earth dominate the nose and carry over to the palate that is what Nebbiolo is all about; wiry, detailed, mouth-coatingly delicious with plenty of assertion. Pair this with mushroom-laden dishes or with antipasti featuring sopressata or carpaccio. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

2016 CHATEAU FILLIATREAU
SAUMUR-CHAMPIGNY VIEILLES VIGNES
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE

One of the icon estates from an appellation that is not widely known in America, Saumur-Champigny, Domaine Filliatreau makes exquisitely detailed and pure expressions of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc.

Eschewing the use of oak, these earth-laden wines always possess soaring fruit, deep color and plenty of intensity without any make-up or lipstick. We have used other cuvees from this estate in the past but for the first time we are featuring the top cuvee that is from 50-90 year old vines. The vines thrive in their home of limestone and clay soil, which adds to the unique charm, and charisma of the wine. Young and plucky enough to consume now, it will age beautifully and after about 8-10 years gains considerable dimension and requires braised foods. Delicate raspberry, dried herbs, licorice, sandalwood and tobacco permeate from the glass and continue challenging the olfactory senses as it opens. In the mouth, the generosity and spine of the grand-scale 2016 vintage gives it plushness, but overall, the composition of the wine is lacy, classy and seemingly fragrant in the mouth with a steely underbelly. The finish is refined, soulful, and a definitive taste of France.

2019 PRISMA SAUVIGNON BLANC
$10.99 BTL./$131.88 CASE

Prisma Sauvignon Blanc is made from vineyards in three cool climate areas of Chile and is a wonderful value.

Subtle mineral aromas conjoin with prominent perfumy lime and grapefruit aspects. Unoaked, livewire, elevated, ethereal and very mouth-watering, this radiantly focused white is perfect fodder with fish tacos or ceviche but it is also perfect with spicier cuisine and can be drunk on its own quite well, too. Good luck finding an American Sauvignon this good at this price!

2016 CHATEAU VIELLA MADIRAN
$12.99 BTL./$155.88 CASE

Sometimes it is important to have a wine that you can shut up and just drink.

Falling into our mantra of don’t think, just drink, this wine with soul that fits that bill. From Madiran and a blend of Tannat and Cabernet Franc, this hearty, opaque red will make you look like a rock star at your next backyard bash. Forward, deep dark and brooding with black and red plum, roasted coffee, spice, maple and dark cherry. Drink this red with barbecued ribs, grilled meat and with a plate of hearty cheeses and meats.

CHAMPAGNE MARC HEBRART
'MES FAVORITES BRUT'
$74.99 BTL./$449.94 - SIX PACK

With a mere 8800 cases produced, Champagne Marc Herbrart is located in the famed village of Marieul-sur-Ay and always makes fizz that provides insane bang for the buck! For many years, we have offered Hebrart’s bubblies, but this the first time we have ever dropped this cuvee on yinz all.

‘Mes Favorites’ is a personal blend of old-vine parcels within Mareuil-sur-Aÿ that owner Jean-Paul Hebrart is very proud of and denotes his own personal feelings within his wine. 75% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay from 2014, 2013 and 2012 vintages, this is not only a Champagne of beauty, it is one of substance and dimension as well. Deep roots are the key, which allow the vines to bring forth the chalk of Marieul as well as a very luxurious texture with fine and casressing bubbles. These old vines also provide killer depth and focus, teeming with layers of generous white chocolate, peach, lime, brioche and a fine tinge of spice. Back to the chalk, scintillating freshness combines with succulence and nervosity, all convening with persistence, impeccable chime and finesse. This selection is my non-vintage Champagne of 2019 and thus far for 2020.

2012 MASI AMARONE
'VAIO SEREGO ALIGHIERI'
$76.99 BTL./$461.94 - SIX PACK

"...'scuse me while I kiss the sky" - Lord Jimi Hendrix

That is exactly what you will do when you try this virtuoso Amarone from one of the region's masters. The vineyards belong to the Serego Alighieri family, the oldest family of the area and direct descendants of the poet Dante. Since 1353, when Dante's son, Pietro, purchased the property in Gargagnago, the family has farmed the same vineyards over an uninterrupted span of twenty generations, and has left its mark on Verona's viticultural history. Two factors give this wine its unique character and extreme elegance. First, is the use of a particular clone (the Serego Alighieri clone) of the Molinara grape. The second factor is the system of partial aging in small cherry wood barrels. This process was regularly employed by Amarone producers until some three centuries ago. Now, it is virtually only used by Masi under orders from the Serego Alighieri family who like to emphasize the natural perfume and taste of cherry, typical of the Corvina grape.

Big, full-on, ripe and ageworthy for 20+ years, this hedonistic, buxom offering is loaded with dark chocolate, melted black licorice, dried cherry, dried violet, pepper and hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Chewy, full-on, very cherry and intensely textured, there are plenty of complex, wild-spice and baked plum characteristics that come out. The finish is saturated and superbly long. Think of a big offensive lineman decked out in a tuxedo. Debonair, meditative stuff that can be drunk with substantial fare like red meat or with strong cheeses like parmesan, pecorino or gorgonzola. 2012 is superb and if you want to drink some yourself on the earlier side, you certainly can do so. If you have a child, grandchild or moment that occurred in 2012, it will also age long enough for those future special occurrences because it cellars impeccably. Drink through 2040.
