2015 BODEGAS RODA
RIOJA 'SELA'
$24.99 BTL./$149.94 - SIX PACK

The 2015 Roda Rioja Sela is made from 82% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, 8% Graciano from 15-30 year old vines planted on limestone with chalk layers that provide ample energy. Possessing laid-back, neo-classical aromas, there is plenty of full, buxom character to go along with all of the nuances that mother nature bestowed to Rioja in 2015. Ripe and aromatic black raspberry scent play off of savory scents of thyme & sage which lurk beneath the surface. Plenty of full fruit drives the wine and is enhanced even further by fine spicy oak tones. Sexy, smooth flavors crawl through the mouth, but while there can be instant gratification here, there is plenty of sneaky grip as well that will allow it to age nicely for a decade. The finish is very polished, regal and uplifting from its 450-600 meter elevation and gracefully expansive. Pretty kickass Rioja for 25 bucks, drink it with a braised pork or beef dish over the next 10-12 years.

2016 PRA SOAVE CLASSICO 'STAFORTE'
$23.99 BTL./$287.88 CASE

It is always a challenge to say who is the best producer in any given growing region but these days, when it comes to Soave, I would have to say that the current titleholder is Pra. The Staforte is from the top of the Soave hill and from four excellent sites (Froscà, Froscarino, Ponsara and Val dell’Acqua). Aged on its lees in tank with batonnage for a minimum of 6 months and then for at least 12 more months in bottle.

Essence of the region, this spot-on interpretation of Soave is a mineral monster with kisses of honey, lemon and pineapple and seashore scents. In the mouth, it is suave and sophisticated with plenty of voltage. The minerality picks up in the driving, flavorful mid-palate and keeps on going to the livewire, brisk finish. A great autumnal white wine to drink with a vegetarian risotto spiked with chanterelles.

2013 DESVIGNES MORGON
COTE-DE-PY 'JAVERNIERES'
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE

Not only one of Beaujolais’s most prolific producers, Domaine Desvignes is one of France’s wine treasures and their Morgon Cru wines are what is so righteous about the good that is currently occurring within Beaujolais. I uncorked a bottle of this wine over the weekend and was very impressed with how well it is starting to show at age five. There were lots of oohs and ahhs at the table as well as several epiphanies at just how well these wines age. We recently sold the 2017 of this wine and it is in need of cellar time, however this one is open for business, yet will continue to develop.

Who says top Gamay and Beaujolais won't age??? Monumental aromas that are very French possess pronounced minerality, perfume, olive, smoked meat and raspberry that sing from the glass. Very exquisite, this is virtual Grand cru Beaujolais with generosity and richness all while maintaining its poised and debonair traits. Layered and old-viney, but never becoming thick or over the top, it finishes with lovely pomegranate, graham, serious earthy and energetic stoniness and spiciness on the coating, detailed finish. Drink over the next 8-10 years with sausage & lentils, hearty mushroom dishes, venison, hearty stews and especially a steak au poivre.

2015 GOODFELLOW PINOT NOIR
'WILLAMETTE VALLEY'
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

Like any great director or coach, the stars that are on the roster are much specified which leaves many excellent and very necessary support players. Marcus Goodfellow utilizes three single vineyards (Durant, Fir Crest and Whistling Ridge) but only the apex selections go into the big wines. All of this translates into is that there is some seriously spectacular fruit that goes into this cuvee.

The Goodfellow 2016 totally follows the patterns of the vintage's greatness and delivers excellence. Sensuous, refined aromas of blackberry, strawberry, soft, slightly elusive herbs, spices, and an underlay of earth and red-hot candy pepper tones build and build as the wine unfolds in the glass. Texturally, it is silky and seductive with clarity and exquisite finesse along with ultra-fine depth and tannins. All of the spices that are on the nose are present on the drawn-out finish. Drink this superb Oregon Pinot over the next 8-10 years.
