2014 JAEGER-DEFAIX RULLY
PREMIER CRU 'MONT-PALAIS'
$24.99 BTL./$299.88 CASE

Damn we love white Burgundy! Jaeger-Defaix is an offshoot project from top-level Chablis producer Bernard Defaix. Located just south of the Côte D'Or and Chassagne-Montrachet, the wines of Rully can offer exquisite white Burgundy experiences without doing damage to your pocketbook.

From 35-40 year old vines from the Premier Cru vineyard, Mont-Palais, located at the highest and stoniest point of the Rully slopes, this wine is certifiably dangerous and is drinking extremely well! Elegant aromas of round and creamy pear, white peach, hazelnut and a delicate touch of flowers fill the nose. What stands out on the palate is the incredible texture and lingering mouthfeel that are perfectly balanced with notes ripe pear fruit, mineral, honey, and that classic hazelnut note with mineral electricity. Very complex, refreshing, and utterly delicious; a gorgeous, world-class chardonnay that is not to be missed! Drink now through 2021 with roasted poultry, lobster, and crab with lots of butter or soft-ripened cheeses.

2016 PAUL PERNOT
BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY
$27.99 BTL./$335.88 CASE

As I have aged into my own eccentricities and with over 30 years’ experience with the Burgundy region, when a producer makes a great regional wine such as this, you know that the rarities are going to deliver. Paul Pernot is a farmer, maybe what one might call a ‘black tie farmer’ given this estate’s holdings, which include the likes of Puligny-Montrachet Perrieres and Batard-Montrachet.

In charge of this estate since 1955, all of Pernot’s white wines are all sophistication and harmony, never overdone with swaths of new oak. The estate’s Bourgogne Chardonnay is from vines planted in 1975 with a pathway separating them from Puligny-Montrachet Village vines. He also adds one stony parcel de-classified from the 1er cru Champ Canet vineyard to embolden this wine even further. A superior version of Bourgogne Blanc. Floral notes with orange, mineral, rosemary and anise lead into a wiry, nervy texture that has all of the weight and richness that 2016 has to offer. A linear, complex and virtual non-stop finish makes this a great wine for matching up with sole or halibut in rich sauces. Drink this spectacular white Burg from one of Puligny's absolute masters over the next 6-7 years.

2015 GUY BOCARD
BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY
$24.99 BTL./$299.88 CASE

Whenever we depart the cellars at Domaine Bocard in Meursault and after saying our goodbyes, often times we get in the car and we state ‘I am lost in the ocean that is Guy Bocard’ or simply ‘Godd%^n Guy’! This is because when Guy speaks, he is difficult to understand; even his colleagues in France say the same thing. What we do understand is that this man is one of the reclusive and unheralded maestros of Meursault.

The first thing that I wrote in my notes during tasting this wine is ‘one thinks that they're sipping Meursault’. In all actuality, one is actually sipping Meursault when in fact, this wine comes from seven different parcels within Meursault city limits and just across the roadway, that starts the boundary for Meursault AOC. An unlikely thing happens when you smell this wine; it literally makes the mouth water! Lemon-lime, mineral, persistent and inviting with telltale Meursault notes of cereal, honey and toasted bread. Ripe and pure entry with good amplitude, but also possesses engaging, citrusy lift and excellent mineral notes on the finish. This wine is kickass for its price and it can best be called a Meursault experience without the Meursault price.

2015 CHATEAU DE LA TERRIERE
MOULIN-A-VENT 'CUVEE DE LA LURE'
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

About 10 years ago, top Brouilly producer, Chateau de la Terriere acquired 5 acres of old vine Moulin-A-Vent. This was exciting because winemaker Frederic Maignet is widely regarded as a specialist for this Cru. Since that time, they have added more land are just up to over 8 acres spread over 5 different lieu dits. What is most important are the shades of granite along with impressive minerality and various limestone and rocks that are interspersed within the sites.

Moulin-A-Vent, often times refered to as the king of Beaujolais, kicks the merde out of so many of the world's $30 and under Pinot Noirs. A burst of violet, rose, deep and dark juicy red and blue berry, spun sugar, candied cep and spicy/minerally/stony aromas roll from the glass. 2015 was an exceptional vintage in Beaujolais and the wines have an added core of rich fruit and depth of flavor; everything is amped up several notches. This is one of the most food friendly red wines on the planet and in a vintage such as 2015 it rivals pinot noir in terms of beauty, complexity and grace. Try with everything from roasted poultry with mushrooms (of course), to salmon, or cheeses and meats. I had a 2009 when I visited France this year and it was superb. 2015 is a similar style of vintage so no problem for this to age for 10-15+ years...yet it can be enjoyed earlier if one desires.
