2008 CHATEAU PEYROU
COTE-DE-CASTILLON BORDEAUX ROUGE
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE

Last year when I was visiting Saint-Emilion maven Catherine Papon Nouvel, she uncorked this library offering and immediately I was swooning and knew we just had to have some. The swoon continued at lunch while we finished the initial bottle with lamb chops and quickly moved on to a second bottle!

Cotes-de-Castillon is a large Bordeaux appellation but Catherine was in on the ground floor by acquiring a 10-acre plot for this wine in 1989. The special part to this vineyard is that these vines sit across a one-lane street from Saint-Emilion. Two other wines are produced at Peyrou but this Grand Vin is solely from the oldest vines, which are 80+ year old. My notes: ‘Superb nose, still speaks St-Emilion. Dense core. Licorice, underlying dried violet, turned earth, blue fruits but ample mushroom, cinnamon and potpourri-like spices. Harmonious, complex and very on point right now. Picks up some saline aspects. Love the seductive aspects up front and the classic Bordeaux structure on the back end. Further succulence after swallowing. Lots of snap back. Utterly delicious right now!’ Beautiful to drink this now and over the next 5-6+ years. ONLY FOUR CASES AVAILABLE!

2016 MAS DES BROUSSES ROUGE
'CHASSEUR DES BROUSSES'
$14.99 BTL./$179.88 CASE

The bloodlines for this Languedoc red wine are quite esteemed. Xavier Peyraud is the grandson of legendary Bandol producer Domaine Tempier’s Lucien and LuLu Peyraud. He and his wife Geraldine took over their family’s vineyards in the Terrasses du Larzac region and are amongst the new tidal wave of young producers who are changing the face of Languedoc.

The 2016 Chasseur des Brousses Rouge is from vineyards in their home village of Puechabon and others in Aniane and is what Southern French Soul personified. OK, it’s damn near Isaac Hayes level when it comes to soul! Prominent strawberry and classic wind-swept herbs and spices while an underflow of black fruit along with snappy peppery tones bring it all home. Broad and flavorful, with a nice level of smoothness and class on the finish, this wine is lip smacking delicious and quite extensive for $15. Have a go at this and enjoy it with slow roasted meat or vegetable dishes jacked with garlic cloves.

2015 CHATEAU DU HUREAU
SAUMUR-CHAMPIGNY 'TUFFE'
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

One of the icon estates from an appellation that is not widely known in America, Saumur-Champigny, Domaine Filliatreau makes exquisitely detailed and pure expressions of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc. Initially created in 1957 as a compliment appellation to Saumur, over the years Saumur-Champigny has become one of the go-to areas in the Loire Valley for its prized Cabernet Franc. Wines in all styles are made here and they can be light and brisk but the finest express the sandy, yellow rock (tuffeau) terroirs that the region is known for and definitely bring a bit of attitude to the party.

When poured in the glass, the hue of purple is stunningly gorgeous. Equally gorgeous are the aromas! Scintillating scents of black cherry, ironstone, dark chocolate cocoa powder, but most importantly is its intense presence of sandalwood. Mouthcoating, high-toned, layered and very vinous. This is total food wine and is one that Parisians go bonkers over! Persistent as hell, this is a seriously pleasurable glassful of Cab Franc and is not a cocktail wine. Have it with pate, BBQ chicken thighs witha tangy sauce and yes, carnitas tacos! Drink it over the next 3 years.

2016 FEUILLARDE SAINT-VERAN
CUVEE TRADITION
$21.99 BTL./$263.88 CASE

The last go-round for version 2016 of our quasi-exclusive unoaked French Chardonnay from Burgundy! While visiting this favorite White Burgundy on my most recent journey to France, it was almost magnet to steel when I tasted this wine. Maybe even love at first sight! Lucien Thomas may be the classic, taciturn, strong-silent guy, his wines speak eloquently and the 2016 is sure to please anyone who enjoys mineral-driven white wine.

Enticing oceanic aromas lead things off followed by scintillating orange and lemon character. Seashell and prominent smoky, stony quality all in its more pure and focused form. Suave entry and gaining electricity, this wine expands and thrills on the persistent, mineral finish. A wow wine for a song and one to enjoy with the impending arrival of salmon, cracked crab, grilled prawns and white meats.
