2013 BREZZA BARBERA D'ALBA
SUPERIORE
$19.99 BTL./$119.94 - SIX PACK

From a Barolo maestro, the secret behind Enzo Brezza’s Barbera Superiore is that it is blended from two apex Barolo vineyards, Cannubi and Cannubi Muscatel. The pedigree on this traditionally styled wine is very formidable all while possessing class and depth.

Never straying from its varietal roots in the mouth, the nose reveals dark plum, dusty clay, classic Barolo-village aromatic floral, porcini, mineral and subtle licorice notes. More aromatically expressive as it unfolds in the glass, it entices you to do what nature tells one to do with Barbera, drink the damn thing! Oozing class on the palate, it is seamless Barbera. Savory, mouth crawling and impressively put together, especially on the finish that fans out nicely. A significant step-up from everyday Barbera, try with risotto or braised beef over the next several years.

2014 KILIKANOON SHIRAZ
'KILLERMAN'S RUN'
$17.99 BTL./$215.88 CASE

These days, the category of Australian wine has become a royal pain in the arse. There are many good wines produced by artisan producers, unfortunately they are seemingly on the island of misfit toys when compared to the conglomerate producers who are slapped in every grocery store with some sort of cute critter on every label. This has led to a stereotype on so many levels, which are mere Milli Vanilli wines, lip-synched plonk and some being quite expensive!

Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, the Killerman’s Run is classic Clare Valley Shiraz meaning ample intensity without ever becoming heavy or superfluous. The delicious 2014 is dark and dense in color, and that intensity follow through from the nose to the long dense finish. Aged entirely in French oak (10% new). A myriad of aromas are present with plum and cherry notes mingling with meaty, mineral and earth nuances. The palate delivers all of this in a multi-layered silky package possessing superb definition and elegance, designed to seduce rather than assault the senses. Definitely a winner, it is a very food friendly offering. Use it with a range of cuisine from more traditional meat dishes through to a great ragu, or even a plate of hard well-flavored cheeses.

The classic version from Trimbach is one of our absolute favorite gateway drugs into the world of pure and unadulterated bone DRY Riesling from Alsace.
