2013 FATTORIA DI PETROIO
CHIANTI CLASSICO
$13.99 BTL./$83.94 - SIX PACK

90% Sangiovese and 10% blend Colorino & Malvasia Nera. Located North of Siena the fine wines of Fattoria di Petroio deliver a lot of bang for the buck and the exceedingly tasty 2013 is no exception. Now firmly in charge of making the wines, Diana Lenzi is kicking serious Chianti arse with these Castelnuovo Berardenga-based wines and we are thrilled to not only offer this wine but to have her here today to embellish on it and the following wines.

Flaunting sexy fruit and minerality, the generosity of 2013 is formidable in this fine-buy Chianti Classico. Hearty cherry, underbrush and savory spices flow from the glass and follow through to a texture that possesses depth and personality that never give way to being flamboyant or overdone. Plenty of character and spine, this wine is an excellent accompaniment to just about any Italian-inspired meal.

2013 FATTORIA DI PETROIO
CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA
$31.99 BTL./$191.94 - SIX PACK

One of the things we admire most about Petroio's wines is that Riserva actually means something and is not merely a tag thrown on to the label and done with the minimum requirements. Lots of love and aging goes into this wine, almost three years in tonneaux and botti.

The 2013 Riserva is a truly fine and elegant bottle of wine that has substantial structure and the finesse and balance to go the distance. Engaging aromas of dark chocolate, tobacco, toffee and leather peek in and mingle gracefully with smoked plum, roasted herbs, violets and licorice. Right now, this Chianti presents an ultra-complex array of aromas that are seamlessly echoed in the mouth, which reflect meticulous care in both the vineyard and winery. A delectable choice for a grilled steak now, however this wine does age beautifully. Enjoy over the next 12-15 years.

2014 FATTORIA DI PETROIO
CHIANTI CLASSICO
$13.99 BTL./$83.94 - SIX PACK

On the heels of the 2013 is the debut of Diana’s newly arrived 2014. In what is a challenging vintage, Diana made a fine and successful Chianti due to the fact that she produced very little Riserva. Translation is that there is excellent, well-sorted fruit in this offering that really punches above its weight class and the wine merits your attention. We are one of the absolute first to have a chance to taste the wine today!

Savory, Tuscan scents combine red and a tinge of black cherry, briar, sage and pepper lead into a harmonious, forward texture that conveys openness and is very gracious. Finishing suave, velvety and high-toned, this classy Chianti will pair beautifully with grilled sausages, roasted pork or even heartier fish dishes.

2011 FATTORIA DI PETROIO
CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA
$199.00 - 5-LITER BOTTLE

We have only one to offer of this fine Chianti Riserva in this super-sized, ultimate 5-liter party bottle that is the equivalent of just under 7 standard 750ml bottles. Two years on and a warm vintage, this wine shows extremely well indeed. Diana’s 2011 Riserva is utterly delicious. Fragrant, deep scents of sage, morello cherry, violet and cinnamon stick lead into a texture that crawls through the mouth and is true-to-form Berardenga with its substance, but true-to-form Petroio with its class. In this large format bottle, this wine can easily age another decade. Serve it at large celebrations. NOTE: We only have one magnum that arrives with Diana to sample from and when it’s gone...well, you get the picture.

2016 FATTORIA DI PETROIO
EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
$22.99 BTL. - 500 ML BOTTLE

Fattoria di Petroio happens to produce a small bit of heavenly olive oil from their 800 or so trees. Not a lot of oil is made here, but when it is available, all of the gourmands on this list should be salivating! The olives for this bottling are a blend of all of the varieties of olives grown at the estate, Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo, and we don’t often offer it out to the entire list.

This southernmost tip of Chianti Classico tends to produce oils that take on an intense and flavorful quality, and this one definitely exhibits those traits, and then some! Nice buttery texture that reveals ripe, heady fruit with an abundance of flavor, and true to Tuscan form, plenty of spice. For us at The Cellar Door, we just love dunking bread in it, but it will also work drizzled over fresh zucchini or perhaps with an American version of Bistecca Fiorentina.
