‘The 2015 Ultreia St Jacques is the entry-level red for the Ultreia range and is amazingly good for the price. Produced from old vines, this is a serious wine, with juicy fruit, a fine palate and good freshness for the conditions of the year. They have included new vineyards that they have been working for the last four or five years, so they are able to bottle a little bit more wine. This is a great value....Raúl Pérez should need no introduction by now. With a clear focus on terroir, the wines are often named after the places or vineyards where the grapes come from, and the range is very wide. 2011 CHATEAU CHARMAIL
HAUT-MEDOC ROUGE

Located a mere 2 kilometers north of Saint-Estephe, Chateau Charmail's vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petite Verdot are contiguous around the Chateau. What makes these wines possess good distinction is the virtual mosaic of terroirs (gravel, clay, sand and limestone) that bring ultimate dimension and depth. In just about all vintages of Charmail, these are well structured Bordeaux.

One of the great sleeper vintages that many wine insiders have figured out is the sneaky-fine 2011. Still no shortage of classic Bordeaux grip, the cool qualities of 2011 show up quite well, Laden with inviting cassis and red berry, smoke, engaging cooking herbs, potpourri and dark chocolate tones. Rather succulently textured and arriving in waves, the wine fills the mouth and has ample, underlying structure that will allow it to develop nicely. As mentioned when we offered one of the Anselmo Mendes wines a few months ago, Vinho Verde is an actual wine region in Northern Portugal and not always the light and fizzy bone-dry drink that we all love to quaff. Some serious white wines are produced in this area and Anselmo Mendes is one of the stalwart producers specializing in non-spritzy wines.

Avesso is one of the many indigenous grapes of the Vinho Verde region and is a great partner in crime to the more famous Alvarinho grape. The Mendes version reveals the classic seashore scents alongside nectarine, almond and subtle mineral. Lots of burst, lots of palate coverage, this offering will pair beautifully with just about anything that swims.

Also on our ‘weird wine merde-o-meter’ this week, is a blend from one of Eola-Amity and Oregon’s prime producers. Since 1986, Evesham Wood has been one of our state’s influential producers and their prowess certainly carries over to their white wines as well as their fine Pinot Noirs.

The Blanc de Puit Sec is from the estate Puit Sec vineyard and is Pinot Gris based with a number of other known and lesser known aromatic varietals. Almost reverberating aromas of powdery orange and tangerine scents combine with exotic sub-scents of lemon balm, spice, hints of lime-blossom and a kiss of lychee. Confident and elegant with swanky fruit flavors of white peach, citrus and wet stone kept in perfect balance by the exacting and zingy acidity. Enjoy this beautiful offering with salmon, trout and young goat cheese. A damn delicious bottle of Oregon wine that is insane for the money.
