5/5/17 White Burgundy Friday Sips

FRIDAY SIPS
White Burgundy + One Red
Today, May 5 from 1:30 - 6:30
We do have an affinity for White Burgundy here at The Cellar Door and we love so many of the great regions in this area from Macon all the way up to Chablis and in between. Truth is, there are numerous values within the entire Burgundy region and we will sample four coming from four different areas of the appellation. We'll also have a French Red for those who need to have their Friday red wine fix.

2014 JAEGER-DEFAIX RULLY
'MONT-PALAIS' PREMIER CRU
$25.99 BTL./$311.88 CASE

Damn we love white Burgundy! Jaeger-Defaix is an offshoot project from top-level Chablis producer Bernard Defaix. Located just south of the Côte D'Or and Chassagne-Montrachet, the wines of Rully can offer exquisite white Burgundy experiences without doing damage to your pocketbook.

From 35-40 year old vines from the Premier Cru vineyard, Mont-Palais, located at the highest and stoniest point of the Rully slopes, this wine is certifiably dangerous! Elegant aromas of round and creamy pear, white peach, hazelnut and a delicate touch of flowers fill the nose. What stands out on the palate is the incredible texture and lingering mouthfeel that are perfectly balanced with notes ripe pear fruit, mineral, honey, and that classic hazelnut note with mineral electricity. Very complex, refreshing, and utterly delicious; a gorgeous, world-class chardonnay that is not to be missed! Drink now through 2021 with roasted poultry, lobster, and crab with lots of butter or soft-ripened cheeses.

2015 THEVENET ST-VERAN VIEILLES VIGNES
'CLOS DE L'ERMITAGE'
$21.99 BTL./$263.88 CASE

Overstating things in the wine business can be a common practice, especially from the enemy of the wine trade, the wine marketer! However, it is not an overstatement that the Thevenet boys have followed in their late father Jean-Claude’s footsteps and are one of the finest producers of white Burgundy regardless of appellation. This St-Veran will shove aside many poorly produced but slickly marketed negociant merde Cote D’Or or Pouilly-Fuisse wines.

The Clos de l'Ermitage is from an exclusive, monopole site in the village of Prisse and the Thevenet family’s vines are 70 years old. Harvested and cropped at levels more akin to those of Cote D’Or Premier Cru, this non-oaked white Burgundy adventure provides pure scents that invoke the limesatone-clay soils of the region along with lemon, red apple, peat, rock dust and hazelnut. The texture is very relaxed with lots of old-vine depth and persistence that carry into a dense, pure, piercing finish. This wine elicited a "wow!" and an "ahh sooky sooky now!" In our tasting notebooks. Having a special scallop dish or a roasted chicken with mushrooms? Then this is necessary. Drink over the next 5-7 years.

2015 LES HERETIERS DU COMTE-LAFON
MACON-PRISSE
$34.99 BTL. - LIMITED!

If there is one reason to come and taste today, this one is it because we NEVER open wines from Comte-Lafon. Period. They are that scarce and I’m not sure how long the bottles will stretch before we have to uncork to something else.

Owned, operated and made by Meursault Mega-Maestro Dominique Lafon, the Heretiers du Comte Lafon Macon wines are some of the rarest and finest of the region. When Lafon commenced his Maconnais operation, it brought prestige to the area and elevated many younger producers to improve the quality of their wines as well. In this case, we can quote one of the greatest TV shows ever, The Wire: ‘The King stay the King’. Prisse is a Macon village that encompasses both St-Veran and Macon wines. The Lafon vines are east facing planted on clay soils that sit atop very hard, limestone bedrock and are in the Macon-Prisse sector.

Maybe Macon that wants to be Meursault, the 2015 shows aspects that I refer to as 'stony opulence' along with an intense lemon and apple tone. An ethereal, finesseful yet luxuriously deep offering that has good attack and poise while showing nice expansion and richness; the finish is very electric-mineral and almost cobra-like with its striking capabilities! Awesome juice that should be drunk now through 2022+.

2014 PERNOT-BELICARD BEAUNE BLANC
'LES PERTHUISOTS' PREMIER CRU
$39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE

Esteemed bloodlines are the source of this relatively new Domaine launched in 2009. The name Pernot is synonymous in Puligny-Montrachet with wines made by the legendary Paul Pernot. Son Philippe continues to work with his father and makes stellar wines, which remain much undiscovered from him, and his wife’s own 15 hectares primarily in Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault.

Honestly, this is a Beaune Premier Cru site that I have very little experience with but after tasting, I was impressed not only by its location but by its superb quality. Located next to the famed Vignes Franches and one slot north of Clos des Mouches, this rare wine behaves like that site’s little brother, especially considering that Drouhin’s Beaune Clos des Mouches rolls in at well north of $100! Round aspects of pineapple, orange, cereal and subtle mineral/spice tones that follow into a texture that has impressive depth and announces itself as a giant overachiever. No doubt, this is a sexy white Burgundy experience, will drink nicely for a decade and probably beyond.
