A very special afternoon today as we are proud to welcome Gilbert and JB Neufeld Cellars winemaker Justin Neufeld to pour and discuss five of his striking wines. Yakima-based, these are some of the true rising superstar wines from our neighbors to the north and truly merit your tasting attention.

2014 GILBERT CELLARS
LEFT BANK RED

With over 900+ wine producing operations in Washington, there are many established names as well as an abundance of newcomers that have flown under the radar. We have known about Gilbert Cellars for several years and have proudly been touting their wines since first introduced to them.

Located in Yakima, the wines produced at this cellar are solid contenders when it comes to price/quality rapport. Coming from a blend of four vineyard sites this assemblage of four out of the five Bordeaux varietals is 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 49% Merlot & 4% Petit Verdot. Hearty and full-flavored exhibiting black cherry, raspberry, cocoa powder, violet, and aromatic herbs and spices on the nose. Mouth-coating with ripe, but even-keeled smooth-textured fruit and detail all which carry to a finish that is lasting and very dignified; drink over the next 4-6 years.

2013 GILBERT CELLARS
SYRAH COLUMBIA VALLEY

From three different Columbia Valley Vineyards, this Syrah cradles the boundaries of new world meeting old world. Pure, plum-pepper aspects and dusty earth shine from the glass, but there is also plenty of sensuality. The flavors are full, smoky and alluring. Drawn-out and revealing dimension, this promises to shape up to be a fantastic Washington Syrah. This wine is broad while never becoming burdensome. The finish extends and reveals ground black pepper along with exotic spices. A mouth filling number that is sure to be a hit at your next barbecue.

2016 GILBERT CELLARS ROSE
WAHLUKE SLOPE

Gilbert’s version is made from 80% Mourvedre and 20% Grenache and comes from Washington's Wahluke Slope. More than not, Washington Rosé are more akin to Hawaiian Punch with alcohol, but in this wine's case, the Mourvedre shows itself in a strong manner and is full of joy and character with the addition of Grenache bringing forth a bit of body and red fruits. Fleshy, meaty strawberry and raspberry with an array of spices that carry over into the mouth-filling and invigorating texture. Delicious by itself, as a starter with meats and cheeses or with grilled fish.

2013 JB NEUFELD CABERNET SAUVIGNON
YAKIMA VALLEY

Along with his duties as winemaker at Gibert Cellars Justin Neufeld makes wines under his own labels sourced from some of Washington’s most epic vineyards. One taste of these wines as well as the above-mentioned Gilbert wines and you will see that this dude is one of the real comers in Washington.

The Yakima Cab is blended from Artz, Washington Good Earth and Two Blondes Vineyards and is comprised of 90% Cabernet sauvignon and 9% Cab Franc. Laden with cassis, tobacco, blackberry, smoke, allspice and black pepper tones that are nicely integrated with spicy oak notes on the nose. Polished, harmonized and sophisticated in the mouth, this wine is a great match with any red meat dish. Smoky flavors shine among the well-placed red fruit tones that have lovely depth and concentration without being overbearing or hot. The finish is very expansive, balanced and offering up an array of spices. A true Cab lover's Cab and one that can be accessed now, but will easily drink for 10-12 years.

2013 JB NEUFELD CABERNET SAUVIGNON
DUBRUL VINEYARD

Yakima Valley’s DuBrul Vineyard is certainly one of Washington’s most prolific. Planted in 1992, plethoras of wonderful wines have emerged from this site and Justin’s version isn’t taking a back seat to any of them. Given the pedigree of the site, this wine is a steal given its price point versus others who utilize DuBrul fruit.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon and loaded with blackberry and cranberry fruit that is enhanced by complex coffee, anise, smoke and mint tones; mysterious, debonair and In the mouth it is loaded, packed and stacked. Buxom, smooth and mouthcoating, but don't be misled, there is ample structure and backbone that is submerged beneath the swath of chewy fruit stating this wine will age impeccably. Easily a 15 year from vintage date wine.
