Drop by to taste the three exciting red wines from France's hallowed Bordeaux region. Lots of Cabernet and Merlot will be represented

2009 CHATEAU MAYNE DU CROS GRAVES ROUGE
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

The region of Graves is quite important to Bordeaux, especially since its close proximity to the city itself. Beginning on Bordeaux's outskirts and extending 31 miles south it's home to luminaries like Haut-Brion and Pape Clement. What distinguishes the area are the gravelly soils. Chateau Mayne du Cros is a classic version of a wine from this area. 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot from the southern reaches of the region, it also doesn't hurt that it comes from the luscious, very formidable 2009 vintage.

Adobe-like earth, prominent mineral and subtle spice play off of a foundation of bing cherry, raspberry and a touch of dark chocolate. In the mouth it is unapologetically Bordeaux with a dry texture that moves nicely from start to finish. The depth of the vintage makes this an excellent value. Drink over the next 4-6 years.

2009 CHATEAU VIEUX CHEVROL LALANDE DE POMEROL
$22.50 BTL./$270.00 CASE

Lalande de Pomerol is an appellation that lies just north of Pomerol. In the last 20 years new owners have pumped lots of vibrancy into this once-forgotten area and what is emerging are terrific wines that have become ground-zero for magical price/quality rapport. The differences between Lalande de Pomerol and Pomerol are revealed in the soils. Lalande has more sand in the soils whereas Pomerol possesses more clay and gravel. Vieux Chevrol's soils in the village of Neac have more in common with Pomerol, especially due to the abundance of clay and less sand.

Traditionally-formed, this Bordeaux kills it for its price point. Only 10% new oak utilized so it maintains its soulful nucleus of red earth which marries with fine blueberry fruit, cinnamon, caraway and laurel tones. The ampleness of the fruit combined with the depth of the vintage make this very alluring. Warm, engaging, yet maintaining weightless aspects all which extend and linger brilliantly. Smooth and lacy now and will develop nicely through 2019.

2009 CHATEAU MONGRAVEY MARGAUX
$31.99 BTL./$383.88 CASE

The not-so-subliminal message that we have been sending over the last three years when it comes to Bordeaux is that the excitement isn't with the out-of-touch, obscenely-priced classified growth Chateaux, but with wines that deliver high-quality in the $20-$50 range which can certainly be cellared and enjoyed over quite a long period of time. One such fine Chateau within the Margaux region which isn't a classified growth is the 23 acre Chateau Mongravey.

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and possessing stylish aromas of aromas of cedar, bright cherry, currant and licorice. On the palate it is round and soft with ripe tannins, rich bright red fruits, warm cigar box notes and earthy undertones. This wine possesses the depth, great balance and finesse that are synonymous with the Margaux region. 2009 and 2010 are both prolific vintages for Bordeaux and while having an accessible underbelly, this will age nicely through 2023+.
