2012 SESTI ROSSO TOSCANA 'MONTELECCIO'
$21.99 BTL./$263.88 CASE

Sesti is a luxurious, high-end Brunello producer who makes wines that are very sought after by collectors and Tuscan wine aficionados. While their top wines easily cross the three-digit mark, they also make a terrific wine from 100% Sangiovese within the borders of Montalcino.

Taking the Monteleccio, which is the Italian version of the Latin name of Montalcino, meaning hill of the holm oaks, this wine gives a Sesti experience for a nice price. Younger vines and aged 1 year in 3000 liter barrels and traditionally formed, this red is harmonious and real with red berry fruit, roasted sage, violet and rich earth notes. There is a beautiful note of purity once this wine hits the mouth, with a core of ripe cherry, Tuscan herbs and fine tannins that are both ripe and yet add a beautiful frame for the pure fruit. This is a wine that while delicious alone, really croons with food, especially roasted meat dishes, pasta with sage and butter with or without mushroom preparations.

2012 CARPE DIEM CABERNET SAUVIGNON
NAPA VALLEY
$23.99 BTL/$287.88 CASE

It is uncommon to obtain top-notch Napa Valley cab made by an excellent source for a price such as this, so if you love Napa and California Cab we are highly encouraging you to give this one a go. It is all about performance and in this price category this wine is way undervalued. Where else can one score a wine that has been vinified by the folks at Dominus and supervised by the legendary Christian Moeuix? Think about that next time you trip over your shoelaces to grab a $65+ dollar bottle of Chateau St. Jean Cab "Cinq Cepages"!

Made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, version 2012 is a bit more robust and muscular than usual but doesn't deter from the fact that it is exquisitely crafted. Bordeaux-inspired earth and finesse without ever sacrificing the Napa Valley warmth and deep fruit, there is a plethora of cassis, blackberry and cedar to go along with undertones of vanilla, graphite and tobacco. Lots of texture here along with generous mulled spice and red earth. Picks up more backbone as it slides to the handsomely poised finish. A steal of a Napa Valley Cab that will drink and develop through 2020.

2014 SALVARD CHEVERNY ROSE
$13.99 BTL./$167.88 CASE

Since Bryan is still in France and s returning Tuesday, it’s time to dust off the old Cheverny story. Drink Cheverny just don't visit there. Reminiscing about a visit to the Loire Valley and this specific grower and village in 1996, Bryan got inspired to feature this flavorful white wine and tell a little travel story.

Attached at the hip by the adjacent village of Cours-Cheverny, if you visit Cheverny you can have lovely white wine, but......Woke up, decided to take the bus from Blois instead of driving. The bus stops and pretty much leaves you off in the middle of a damn wheat field and then you have to walk about 20 minutes to find a cigarette-smoke-stained bar to wait and have a cup of coffee because you are early for your appointment. If you have been to France, you know which bar I am talking about, it is in many sleepy villages. After drinking 4 cups of dishwater disguising itself as coffee, Bryan then went on his visit to Domaine Salvard. Before we go into the wine, a very important question: How is it that a country that is so renowned for its creativity and influence in both food and wine cannot make a good cup of coffee? If you ever want to kick a caffeine addiction, just go to France, have a cup of coffee or two and you will quit. In Italy, you might have to wait two hours in the post office to mail a postcard, but damn-it, you are going to have good caffe!

We always are asked for tips about travel in France, but here is an important one to remember. While in France, if you are going to have your acid-reflux act up, don't do it with their coffee, do it with their brilliant wines! Domaine Salvard is a longtime Loire Valley favorite and perennial apex buy. The 2014 Rose is blazing with fun and character this year. 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Gamay. Very fine in color, but very arresting and striking with its flavors, this Rose will make you frenetic! Virtually chiming aromas of hawthorn, grapefruit, red raspberry and a touch of smoky earth impeccably roll into a texture that is almost floral in the mouth with bone-dry bursting citrus that reveals itself on the mouth-watering, call you back for more finish.

After the visit to the Domaine, the bus didn't arrive for another 2 hours, so it was back to the Bar Cheverny for lunch. I think I ate roadkill. Truthfully, I really try to block out any remaining flashbacks of Cheverny that I might have. As I said, drink the wine, maybe visit a Domaine, but don't visit the village although I've heard there is a decent castle in the neighborhood…

The Cellar Door will be closed Monday June 8 and will re-open Tuesday June 9 at 9:00 AM
